Homo naledi, a new species of the genus Homo from the Dinaledi Chamber, South Africa
Homo naledi is a previously-unknown species of extinct hominin discovered within the Dinaledi Chamber of the Rising Star cave system, Cradle of Humankind, South Africa. This species is characterized by body mass and stature similar to small-bodied human populations but a small endocranial volume similar to australopiths. Cranial morphology of H. naledi is unique, but most similar to early Homo species including Homo erectus, Homo habilis or Homo rudolfensis. While primitive, the dentition is generally small and simple in occlusal morphology. H. naledi has humanlike manipulatory adaptations of the hand and wrist. It also exhibits a humanlike foot and lower limb. These humanlike aspects are contrasted in the postcrania with a more primitive or australopith-like trunk, shoulder, pelvis and proximal femur. Representing at least 15 individuals with most skeletal elements repeated multiple times, this is the largest assemblage of a single species of hominins yet discovered in Africa. - See more at: [link to elifesciences.org]

Homo naledi, is about 2.5 to 2.8 million years old, says Professor Lee Berger, who led the discovery team.

How do they arrive at that it is a whole new species based on one set of fossils?

"Homo as the genus of the human race, within the order Primates, was formally instituted in Modern Latin 1758 by Linnaeus (originally also including chimpanzees). Used since in various Latin or pseudo-Latin combinations intended to emphasize some aspect of humanity, as in Henri Bergson's Homo faber "man the tool-maker" (in "L'Evolution Créatrice", 1907)."

Alex you might be considered homo comodeus "man the joker".

These people bust me up! LOL
They find someone's retarded and physically deformed offspring that they locked in a cave somewhere and all of a sudden all humans looked like this!

Years from now they will find someone with Down's Syndrome and that's what we all will look like.

LOL

Notice how they never find 2 or a whole village. It's always just one.

Extinct? Maybe. Absorbed more likely. I’ll wager modern man has a bit of their DNA in our lineage.

Society is an apt term here. The large team of scientists believe that they were burying their dead - Homo naledi, is about 2.5 to 2.8 million years old, says Professor Lee Berger, who led the discovery team.

Dawn of Humanity will air next week on PBS - 9/16.

Very unique - legs and feet human-like, hands a mix of human and primitive, teeth human like, skulls like early homo-nids, but unlike those other early homonid species their brain is relatively very small - one-third the size of human brain today.
