"Things" make happy people happier, but cannot make an unhappy person happy.

Agree. They can enhance happiness.

I think wealth reveals character.
 Quoting: SoulWinner

Yup, wealth will make an unhappy person miserable while bringing more opportunities to a happy person that increases their happiness. I love having the money to do fun things with my family, it increases our quality time together and removes worry from everyday living.
 Quoting: BRIEF

It's funny to see such stereotypes being posted from a person that spends a lot of time alone on GLP. Can you have also quality time in solitude? If not, you are in a bad company.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70293906

I do enjoy alone time, but while at work and the kids in school, I don't see how we could spend those hours together...I don't need to be up my family's ass all the time in order to share quality time with them.

Re: True Happiness Comes From Taking Away Desires , Not Adding Possession
I spent almost 5 years working on my so called dream home living in fantasy thinking of what my life would be like when it was done. Turns out I was wrong about everything and I wasted years not living, waiting for nothing.

I walked away from it all, today I'm trying to forgive myself for doing what I did to myself. The illusion of it all.

I've discovered now starting over with very little, just live in a small 2 bedroom apartment, that I have sense of freedom, those possessions I had before owned me in every way. I did'nt realize this at all until it was gone. I was a slave to materialistic things.

Even if I came into a lot of money to replace what I had before, I wouldn't do it again, I beginning to enjoy my simple life today.

Not true. Real happiness doesn't even exist, it is a myth.

And seeking happiness from imaginary friends won't do you any good. Sex, money, power, fast cars...those are the source of happiness, not pipe dreams.

That's what happened to me, I had to go through pure hell to wake up and come out to the other side. Other people saw it way before I did, denial was huge for me, than acceptance was my next big challenge and something I still struggle with at times. But I face it and talk about it today.

You guys are silly.. it goes against nature to deny desire.. God as you call it.. wants us to become more not less.. do whatever makes you happy.. happiness comes from desiring something and believing one would feel better by having it. Desire creates experience.. and in so doing you becoming more.. So, bottom line is if your desire is to have material things.. then go for it.. If your desire is to not have material things and it brings you joy.. then go for it.. but just know that you cannot help others with less.. more = more possibilities..

Re: True Happiness Comes From Taking Away Desires , Not Adding Possession
Happiness is love and compassion, beauty and gratitude. These are our birthright, but we must suffer temptation, distraction, and selfishness to experience the truth of what we are and what life and joy are. Service to others, kindness and compassion create joy. Things, wealth, the illusion of worldly power are illusions.

I salute all of you who have learned this very important lesson!
It did take going through Hell and coming out the other side for me too!

I'm happy today with No- Thing and am in good company with myself.
There is no price tag for peace, good sleep, good health, kindness, love and the warmth and joy that knowing The Lord brings to you INSIDE.

My Mom and I were just talking about attachments to people, places and things this morning, it's huge really and holds us back. She told me to create a bonfire image in my mind and throw all my attachments into it and walk away. I'll let you know if that works for me. :)

the hard part is being long suffering and patient with the ones you love that still can not see this truth. This is the part that does not bring joy. This is the part that makes us be selfless in our life journeys. this is the part we are called for.

Culture has programmed people to link happiness with consumerism and materialism.

Because I have this nice watch or fancy car I am showing people my happiness.

Which causes debt and enslaves you to the system.

Culture is not your friend.

Yup, wealth will make an unhappy person miserable while bringing more opportunities to a happy person that increases their happiness. I love having the money to do fun things with my family, it increases our quality time together and removes worry from everyday living.

You clearly don't know me. There's nothing holy or good about being poor if you have the ability to make money. Poor people can't help others the way a wealthy man can. Can you write a check to a family about to lose their home and save them from being evicted? Can you give a car to someone that needs one to get back and forth to a job to support their family? I can and I have done those things...I also enjoy the fruits of my labor, but do I worship money? No.
