Earthquake Science + The Media = Sensationalism!

I'm new to living in Oregon. So I am definitely excited for the new earthquake sensing and predicting technology. Our local media is definitely enjoying being able to convince us that it's going to happen at any moment.

I live in NW Portland neighborhood where they have recently predicted would suffer most of the structural damage in the city. I work at a local restaurant and over hear lots of discussion of "The Big One". People are nervous.

Question is, when do we start taking "The Big One" seriously? Can you really be prepared for something of that magnitude?

The article for your reading pleasure seems to be sensationalizing the situation, or am I too media saturated to see the truth?
