Explosion Jhabua, India - at least 104 killed

24 feared dead, over 50 injured in an explosion in MP's Jhabua

Around 24 people were feared dead and over 50 were left injured in an explosion at Petlawad area of Jhabua district in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday early morning.

All the injured have been admitted to Petlawad hospital.
As per the initial reports, the blast took place inside a three-storey building at Thanthla road however, the reason behind the blast has not been confirmed yet.

The blast took place near new bus stand area of Petlawad.

“There are 104 confirmed deaths at the moment. Eighty-two postmortems have been carried out and 22 are still pending,” ML Gond, an inspector in charge of Jhabua’s police control room, told AFP by phone.

The reason for the blast was not immediately clear but sources said it may have been triggered by gelatine sticks, used for mining, that were stored along with LPG cylinders in a nearby home.

The blast occurred in the town of Petlawad at around 8:30am when dozens of office workers and schoolchildren were having breakfast at the restaurant. "People were thrown away like pebbles in the air due to the explosion," said a witness.
