St. Elizabeth School of Nursing facing discrimination lawsuit


LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) — The St. Elizabeth School of Nursing is facing a discrimination lawsuit from a former African-American student.

The suit filed by Shavonn Branson alleges she was treated unfairly and claims the school violated Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which she said includes her isolation from other students during clinicals.

According to the lawsuit filed Wednesday morning, of about 250 students enrolled only six are African-American. Branson claims she and other black students were given more rigorous grading of tests, papers and clinical performances compared to Caucasian students.

The lawsuit asks the school to allow Branson to receive the passing score of 78 percent so she can finish her degree, or pay her the sum of her tuition and expenses from her time in school.
