Worked on several water treatment plants (Construction) was told that you just get some barrels and fill them up and let the water off gas for 24hrs, stuff is gone, always remembered that, any truth to that?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70273178

I live in an area where they use chloramine. Its a suspended solid instead of a liquid. Airing out the barrels doesn't work. You have to filter it... Nasty shit.
 Quoting: Red_Eyed

Here we go. Have you ever asked yourself, why chloramine instead of chlorine... That is the million dollar question. The reason is because of excess disinfection byproducts (yes that cause cancer). Yes I am saying our water can cause cancer. look up

Dichloroacetic acid
Bromodichloromethane
Bromoform
Dibromochloromethane
Dibromoacetic acid

These are all disinfection byproducts.

I’m very thankful I use well water. It has to be some of the best water I have ever had.

Low (or complete absence of) bacteria and viruses like cryptosporidium and giardia.
But rich in minerals.
It's becoming harder and harder to get water rights.

Bro, I am a water treatment operator and vicariously know all about chlorine and its benefits.

I know that it is is mixed with water and becomes hypochlorous acid.
That has better disinfectant properties while the pH is lower and the temperature being higher..
BUT can make trihalomethanes (THM) when it comes in contact with organic solids.

One way around that is by adding ammonia to create chloromines which DO NOT create THM.. But do not disinfect as well.

There is Ozone.. But it's costly to generate.

There's boiling, but it is not viable for large scale water municipalities.

There's iodine. But that's really only used as emergency.
(It leaves a fishy taste)

There's bromine, but it's very difficult to handle safely.

Some countries are trying out sound waves to disinfect.. But it is in its baby steps and is very costly.

ALL IN ALL

That video was shocking and I had to share it.

As someone who made a C in college chemistry I have a question.

Could it be that rather than absorbing into the guys skin that the chlorine (a very volatile substance) bound with chemicals on the guys skin?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70435394

That's what I was thinking. Or that the chlorine killed bacteria, oils and germs on his hand and so there was less free chlorine and more oxidized chlorine. Bleach is also another form of chlorine and you can use it to make water potable.

As has been mentioned in previous posts here:

The free chlorine is not being "absorbed" into his body. It is reacting with the surface of his skin to form chloramine, which would be harmless at that level, would not pass through the skin and easily washed off with soap and water.

The video is just pseudoscience and complete BS.

Living water, some call it holy water, can clean a bay full of waste water. A pregnant woman's body produces clustered water, a step up from structured water, which is 'spring' water.
I recall that you can position 8 magnets around the inlet pipe, which 'structures' the water. Reminds me I need to follow up on that one.

Chlorine is super bad for your thyroid too.. It replaces iodine on receptors and can cause goiters and/or hypothyroid symptoms.

But, so are bromides, which are found in commercial breads, Mt Dew, orange sodas, etc.
If you have a bunch of those tiny red dots, like freckles/moles on your skin, its a sign of bromide poison.

We live in a giant carcinogenic bubble.

I'd rather deal with chlorine drama than dysentery though. Iodine can be replaced.

I've known people who have taken chlorine dioxide internally for different things and have reported great results. Its supposed to be a miracle cure for kids with autism (among other steps in the treatment). I've personally seen amazing results with it in the kids, despite being on the fence about it...but you won't see me endorsing it.

There are a number of transdermal patches available now that deliver medication through the skin. There have also been studies performed that show some of the ingredients found in cosmetics can find their way into the bloodstream. I'm not trying to throw shade on the chemists or the water treatment operators here, but given what we know about the chemicals found in transdermal medications and cosmetics having the ability to be absorbed through the skin, have there been any studies performed to confirm that chlorine is not one of these chemicals that can also be absorbed?

What about all that chlorine and fluoride steam we're breathing when we take showers?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70437422

Fluoride is a huge problem. Chlorine is not. Running city water wouldn't even be possible without chlorine. Do you realize how nasty water was before chlorination? Disease and rampant death caused by microorganisms. Personally I'd rather have chlorine than that nasty stuff.

Fluoride is mass medication of unwilling people. The only solution is well water, reverse osmosis, or bottled water that doesn't have Flouride.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 65779549

flouride is found naturally in ground water, and science has shown that without flouride our teeth fall out.

also found that too much flouride will damage your bones.

that is why there is a small amount of flourine gas added to most water supply systems.

its in parts per million.

PARTS PER MILLION
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 70162112

False. All of it. Natural fluoride is calcium fluoride NOT the sodium fluoride they put in our water. Also it is NOT fluorine gas. It's a white powder they get in giant bags. Poisonous. You are a shill OR terribly misinformed.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 65779549

I work at the Greenville utilities water treatment plant.

it is flourine gas

you also should study the elements and how it works.
calcium flouride is flouride. sodium flouride is flouride.

flouride is flouride.

there is nothing unnatural about it. it is the same flouride.

we dont use sodium or calcium flouride.

we use flourine GAS.
Chlorine
and our state of the art ozonia

on another note we use many methods of sterilization which makes it harder for bacteria to adapt.

We draw our water from an aquifer. It's run through a greensand filter and then through a reverse osmosis plant. Only hypo and fluoride are dosed after. I have argued against the fluoride but officials want it in.
As for the chlorine. I would rather have it in.
If I had my own personal well, I would want to get a complete test done. Typically fluoride in well water is higher then what is put in. Arsenic is also a big concern.

There are chlorine neutralizers you can buy for your pool. Also laundry detergent makers may put chlorine neutralizers in their detergents because they say it helps to prevent the fading of clothes.

The guy in the video maybe had a little vial of neutralizer hidden behind his fingers when he dipped them into the water.

First We can't see the ten drops being added to the "hand" water

Second, The "hand" water does turn slightly yellow

Third, to really prove the point, he should have inserted his other hand into the yellow water so we could see the alleged event occur thereby crearing up the water

And last, he's promoting his product for FFS....

You are very wrong about that. Fluorine gas will kill the shit out of anything it comes in contact with. It is extremely reactive and glass, steel fibers and even asbestos will combust in a cold stream of fluorine.

And no, elemental fluorine gas is NOT used to prevent tooth decay. If your teeth ever contacted fluorine, they would be gone. You are confusing fluorine with fluoride, which is an anion of fluoride which exists as a salt. Yes, it is used to prevent tooth decay.

First off Flouride should never be added to any water. Fuck that.

Secondly, I am all for chlorine as water treatment for large municipalities. Do not drink the water straight from the tap, use reverse osmosis. You can rest assured the chlorine has taken care of any bacteria trying to proliferate inside the water pipes and that the reverse osmosis removes the chlorine right before you chose to ingest it.

Lastly, install water filters on your shower heads to remove as much chlorine from the water as possible.

All of this is to have the reassurance that your water is not contaminated with bacteria while it exits the faucet. Why chance it with some other methods? When you need to deliever water to 1+ million people there is no better way to treat water than with chlorine.

Just be sure to REMOVE it before you use it. Simple.
