Preferably, this would be a female with a strong swing, because if the bottle didn't break, it was considered a bad omen and the boat considered unlucky. There are tales to this day that reinforce this superstition. One of the most notable involved a bottle that didn't break when Prince Charles' wife, Camilla, christened the new ocean liner Queen Victoria. Its maiden voyage was spoiled by the outbreak of a shipside virus. Still, this was a better outcome than the Titanic, which was simply slid into the water without a formal naming ceremony. And we all know how that turned out." [link to www.heartlandboating.com] |

What are other tricks of the trade? But Dame Helen Mirren - the "godmother" of P&O's newest liner Ventura - instead commanded a team of Royal Marines to abseil down the ship and smash the bottle against the hull in Wednesday's naming ceremony in Southampton. This is because maritime lore holds that if the bottle fails to smash, the ship will be destined for an unlucky life at sea. "To avoid this ill omen, the shipping industry has many tricks to ensure the bubbly breaks. Champagne bottles are extremely tough, having been designed to withstand high pressure, but it only takes a tiny defect, such as a bubble in the glass, to compromise its strength, says Dr Mark Miodownik, a material scientist at King's College London. "Glass is a very hard material. If you want to make a defect in it, you'll find it very difficult, but a diamond is stronger. My top tip would be to score the bottle with a diamond." Her keel was laid in December 1998 and she was launched in January 2000. She was delivered to P&O Cruises in April 2000.[4][5][10][11] P&O Princess wanted Aurora to be built in the UK but there were no British shipyards left large enough to fulfil the order. The ship was christened on 27 April 2000, by HRH Princess Anne. The champagne bottle did not shatter when it hit the ship's side and fell unopened into the sea. This type of occurrence is considered a bad omen among seafarers, and this incident has been blamed for the numerous setbacks that Aurora has encountered throughout her career.[12][13][14][15] |

She's fucked all that will sail in her. The Bitch. "On its initial voyage on 4 July 1961, it suffered a complete loss of coolant to its reactor. With no backup system, the captain ordered members of the engineering crew to find a solution to avoid a nuclear meltdown. Sacrificing their own lives, the engineering crew jury-rigged a secondary coolant system and kept the reactor from a meltdown. Twenty-two crew members died from radiation sickness during the following two years. The sub experienced several other accidents, including two fires and a collision. The series of accidents inspired crew members to nickname the sub Hiroshima. "The ship was launched and christened on April 8, 1959.[1] Breaking with tradition, a man—Captain 3rd Rank V. V. Panov of the 5th Urgent Unit—instead of a woman, was chosen to smash the ceremonial champagne bottle across the ship's stern. The bottle failed to break, instead sliding along the screws and bouncing off the rubber-coated hull. This is traditionally viewed among sea crews as a sign that the ship is unlucky.[4] Captain 2nd Rank Nikolai Vladimirovich Zateyev was the first commander of the submarine.[1]" [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] Last Edited by Nuke68 on 10/13/2015 07:57 PM |
