It doesn't matter if most are doing it for a paycheck, the fact remains that they need to be held responsible for their actions. You still have to live with the consequences of your actions as a human being whether or not your doing it for the better pay or not...

These cops need to wake up and realize they are corporate owned stooges that harass and ruin peoples lives by putting charges on peoples records for possession of marijuana, theft from a Walmart (which steals and exploits this country daily), or dumpster diving for some old chips. They really need to turn a blind eye to this bullshit and worry about real criminals (rapist, murders, and violent crimes in general).

First of all, "they" are a very VERY small group of the population you are talking about. "They" of course need to be brought to justice for their actions, and their pay has nothing to do with that.

Cops are hired to enforce the law. If you have issue with the law (many of which I don't particularly agree with), the cops are not who you should take it up with. Its the people who MAKE the law, not who enforces it. Its like beating down a McDonalds employee because your burger doesn't contain pickles because McDonalds decided they didn't want to include them. Is that fair?

Cops apply for a job like everybody else, the only difference between them and any other working stiff,...is that they can taser and kill other people on the job and be paid for it.

Why do you consider them so special? Has your life required a lot of police protection?

The whole concept of having people I do not know with guns and attitudes, all dressed alike,... with the ability to harass/jail/kill me at will,... freaks me the fuck out.

Cops more of a threat than Al-CIAda,...especially if you are outspoken and critical of government-military-corporate complex in general.

You forgot shooting people and dogs. Cops are always shooting people these days and everyone knows cops love shootin dogs.

I never get pissed at police officers, there is room in society for them. Specifically, though, there are enough experiences that tell me the broad training of them does not start at police officer school, it starts in the military, mostly the Marines, and that culture creeps over to their officer life, including the bribery lifestyle they get to double their income, and that's when they become mutants of what they signed a contract to be in their current life work.

Someday you may need them....yeah to go away. They need others to make sacrifices of income to make a living for their boss, the city, and that's their job. That's the model idea. And then there is reality, where about 99 percent of them do the right thing at the right day to most of the people, but then a large pack of them at any time will have the favorites in their city to make a mealticket out of more than others, and they will also not go after certain other kinds for other extra-career interests. They're changelings; on one day they'll be cops, on another day they'll be mob. When you need them they're hard to find, or cranked up on energy drinks, or bribed out or just fucking prejudiced by their office talk; and when you don't want them they're worse than the guy at the mall kiosk hounding you for attention to buy his story you broke something or did somthing suspicious.

That said, GLP is a P.O.S. for getting anything normal opinion out of. It provokes people to say things that don't apply in real life. It's a trash can forum, understand it.

First off I want to thank you for the cordial debate without escalating to name calling and ad hominem arguments.
I have a friend (not a close one) that use to be on the wrestling team with me in high-school. He's a cop locally down here in FL. I've seen him quite a few times around town and in my hospital (I'm and ER/ICU nurse).

Well I picked his brain about his profession and he mine. I learned that cops don't have to enforce the law unless it's a warrant. Apparently cops have to make an arrest if the person they pull over has a warrant otherwise they can be held liable and sent to jail themselves(I never knew this).

He told me traffic citations and most civil infraction are in fact up to the officer's discretion. A cop doesn't have to arrest you if you pillaging chips in a dumpster in Frito-Lays parking lot, A cop doesn't have to write you a speeding ticket, and a cop doesn't have to arrest you for disorderly conduct and many other negligible things that they continue to do on a daily basis.

So even though they are hired to enforce the law they do have discretion over what they choose to enforce, so the responsibility still lies within in them to make the right call. So the scumbag that just arrest the homeless man for dumpster diving for some food (chips) will get his as you get what you give in this world (Karmas a bitch!)

As Ive said before, I have no issue with any individual police officer but I dont trust "the police" as a whole.

What do you expect OP? You think it's OK for Cops to do whatever they please without public backlash? The fact of the matter is a his OP Law enforcement in the country is out of control, in fact , they are causing massive damage to the economy for putting people in jail for petty charges, most shit that prabobly shodnt be illegal in the first place. People are not angry at the police for no reason.

Your cop problem has a lot to do with the selection, training and supervision of the cops.

Finnish cops are armed to the teeth. They have on their person or in the car their sidearms, MP-5s, shotguns, CS gas, tazers and telescopic batons. Some units have sniper rifles too. They wear a light vest, but have heavy vests, helmets and ballistic shields in the back of the car. They can even call for a military APC and troops to handle a more serious situation.

They also have more rights than your cops. They don't need a warrant to search your person, your home or your car, for instance. They can detain you for a few hours without arresting you or pressing any charges. You can be arrested for 72 hours without court order.

Yet, they are respected, trusted and, in general, liked, because they don't abuse those powers. Also, those few who abuse their power actually do get punished.

They've been selected and trained right. The psychological profiling successfully weeds out egomaniacs, powerhungry psychos, sadists and rambos. The training focuses primarily on defusing a situation instead of aggravating it, and using force only as the truly last resort. The cops always work in pairs, so it's harder for a corrupt cop to do shit without getting caught.

They actually teach the cops to take first a warning shot, then a leg shot and only if that fails they're allowed to take a torso shot. All this is backed up by the harsh penalties they get if they abuse their position. A cop is investigated for an assault if the suspect is harmed in any way. A cop is investigated for an unlawful threat if he simply draws his sidearm and points it at a suspect (without firing). If a cop wounds or kills a suspect, he's in deep shit and is likely to be put on leave for the duration of the investigation. Unless there truly was a deadly threat to the cop or civilians, he's going to go down. Cops have gone down for being trigger-happy or abusive and that really boosts the public trust in law enforcement.

Which means they cannot enforce any thing contrary to the constitution and must arrest anybody who violates that constitution.

This. Most join due to lack of any blue collar skills can't go to college for several reasons including too many kids. Same with military. Either join for college money, want to shoot people or have no blue collar skills. No vocational aptitude.

And police are civilian. Not military.
