Baby boomers are what’s wrong with America’s economy
snippet from the W Post:

They chewed up resources, ran up the debt and escaped responsibility.

Boomers soaked up a lot of economic opportunity without bothering to preserve much for the generations to come. They burned a lot of cheap fossil fuels, filled the atmosphere with heat-trapping gases, and will probably never pay the costs of averting catastrophic climate change or helping their grandchildren adapt to a warmer world. They took control of Washington at the turn of the millennium, and they used it to rack up a lot of federal debt, even before the Great Recession hit.

If anyone deserves to pay more to shore up the federal safety net, either through higher taxes or lower benefits, it’s boomers — the generation that was born into some of the strongest job growth in the history of America, gobbled up the best parts, and left its children and grandchildren with some bones to pick through and a big bill to pay. Politicians shouldn’t be talking about holding that generation harmless. They should be asking how future workers can claw back some of the spoils that the “Me Generation” hoarded for itself.

More from the article:

]When you look at the numbers, the advantages boomers have enjoyed are breathtaking. Start with the economy. Boomers went to work in a job market that their children rightly romanticize. It delivered living-wage work for wide swaths of Americans, even those who didn’t go to college, which by the way cost a fraction of what higher education costs today, even after you adjust for inflation. A single earner could provide for a family. Employees could reasonably expect to advance in their companies and work their way into the middle class. Incomes grew across the board.

Re: Baby boomers are what’s wrong with America’s economy
More:

Earlier this year, in a paper for the Brookings Institution, economist Robert Shapiro tracked the lifetime earnings paths for Americans who entered the labor market in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s. He found a sharp generational divide. The typical U.S. household headed by someone who was 25 to 29 years old in 1975 saw its real income increase by 60 percent until it peaked and began to slowly decline before retirement. For a similar household in 1982, lifetime income peaked 70 percent higher than its starting point. Those are both boomer cohorts.

The groups that came after fared worse. Workers who were 25 to 29 in 1991 saw median earnings peak 50 percent above where they started.

I read that article which is filled with stupid supposition without any facts to back up his claims all and all just the usual shit stirring by a hapless wonk. Although one particular baby boomer named Barak Obama, created more debt for futures generations than all the rest of the potus's combined. But the people who put him there were mils, genxers and women, so he can blame those demographics for those bills!

Wrong boomy:

My generation, Gen X, is in far worse financial shape than our parents were at the same age. Millennials are even worse off than we are. Soon after the Great Recession ended, the Pew Research Center reported that middle-class families were 5 percent less wealthy than their parents had been at their age, even though today’s families work a lot harder — the average family’s total working hours has risen by a quarter over the past 30 years — outside the home, and even though they’re much likelier to include two wage earners. The ensuing recovery has made things worse. Middle-class families owned fewer stocks, businesses and homes in 2013 than they did in 2010, according to calculations by New York University economist Edward Wolff.

Working hours went up. Wages remained stagnant or went down. Boomers trashed the economy, looted the country's institutions and manufacturing base and after decades of looting are over crowding the job markets and clinging unto their job for dear life because they are unable to afford the mortgage payment on their second home, or their boat, are New Jaguar which they financed or are having trouble paying alimony from their 3 different marriages.

Boomers created corporations for you to be employed by.

Do not generalize.

Ya look foolish when ya do....

This generation needs to focus on creating a legacy for themselves. One would hope it is not that of "whinning and blaming"...

Do something. Don't criticize. It's not productive.

Make your life a focused legacy.

To criticize is easy. To actually DO something is difficult.

DO SOMETHING OP...

I agree with the debt part somewhat (I'm gen x/millennial borderline), but millennial selected Obama. You voted for Obama because you listened to the Bush bashing in the media. You liked your free piece of pizza at the polls on Election Day. I still have the pictures of that. You voted for Obamacare second time around and can't stop smoking weed while Nero burns the constitution and spends your children into oblivion. I know millenials get bagged on, but obamaphone generation needs to own up to their responsibility too.

Yeah thanks for making my millennial generation the most educated, yet the most underpaid. Single white male millennials get the most fucked. We pay for everyone's entitlements, extra for health care because you're getting old, and I still contribute to my own retirement because ill never see social security.

ROTFL wwII? Hitler and Germany were the cause, and if you want to go deeper your parents parents did that by economically crushing Germany by dues owed from WWI. If anything your parents were the solution. You know how prosperous america was after WWII? There is a reason you didn't blame them for shit. They gave you everything, and to keep the gravy train going you fucked over the next generations.

The big Banks are still a big part of it, but you cant deny baby boomers fucked us too.

Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!

Boomers paid into the Soc. Sec. Trust Fund for their entire working lives.

What happened to the money?

Cold War Debt Service, nuclear missiles, nuclear submarines, and countless weapons system.

Where else? Korea, Vietnam, Gulf I, Gulf II aka Vietnam in the Quick Sand.

Where is the Soc. Sec. Trust Fund?

Sitting in the jungles of Vietnam, the deserts of Iraq, payoffs to ISIS , Secret Space Fleets, and a million other secret Pentagon projects.

They never met a war or weapons system they didn't like.

Do you feel safer and protected by people who have won only one war since World War II????

Where is the Trust Fund paid by the larget population demographic wave in US HISTORY?

SITTING IN THE BALANCE sheets of General Dynamics, BOEING, McDonald Douglas and plenty of research laboratories.

One place it isn't, in is THE SOCIAL SECURITY TRUST FUND WHICH WE PAID INTO FOR OUR WORKING LIVES!

I don't want to hear a word about Social Security Insolvency!

Our retirement money was stolen by the very people we elected and by those who responsibility was to DEFEND the nation.

The only things they defended were their jobs and their bank accounts.

When is the last time you got a bail out check to meet your bills??????

This is, or rather was, your Social Security Trust Fund!

Boomers trashed the economy, looted the country's institutions and manufacturing base and after decades of looting are over crowding the job markets and clinging unto their job for dear life because they are unable to afford the mortgage payment on their second home, or their boat, are New Jaguar which they financed or are having trouble paying alimony from their 3 different marriages.

haha. you guys don't work. you whine a lot about how hard you work but most of you can't actually show 8 to 5 day after day. You've always got a baby or kid to drive somewhere, or an appointment, or fixing your car or the newest video game to go buy.

Re: Baby boomers are what’s wrong with America’s economy
You whiney mills want to think "jobs were easy and plentiful...."

Well, let me tell you what **I** faced when I completed college - yes, another one who thought college was important and would lead to a better job (it did, eventually). But when I completed college, and out searching for a job, AFFIRMATIVE ACTION was in full force. I wasn't hired SEVERAL TIMES OVER because I was white. Government programs required employers to hire blacks first....even if other whites applicants were just as - OR MORE - qualified.

You want to talk about "no job opportunities," and "boomers ruined the job market," blah, blah. We've ALL faced it, just in different ways. Things change, jobs come and go, and eventually you'll get your shot.

Just quit whining. No one wants to hear it, and it just makes you sound like an Obama-bot.

Re: Baby boomers are what’s wrong with America’s economy
Seems to me, a boomer, 2nd wave, that the Post did its job well. Misinform, misdirect and divide then sheeple. By the looks of things on this forum, there is joy in slinging Mudville tonight.

No one group is to blame. The bankers got away with it in 1913. Our leadership allowed them and the masses felt secure, protected until our first true correction in 1929. The WWII folks felt empowered by winning and our bankers took advantage of the broke and destroyed European and Asian worlds. We deserved it all because we were victorious. The next meddlers, those hippie boomers were going to change the world. They did, temporarily; the draft was suspended; the petrodollar arose, compliments of Nixon and Kissinger, brought us another Happy period. Even some of the boomer revolutionaries sold out and joined the wall street whores. With inflation rapidly rising, the petro scheme began to unravel, until the gallant Ronald appeared and started a new phony love affair. He decreased taxes, BRAVO! Short lived however. OOPS, Washington we have a problem, where do we get the money to cover government expenses? Not to worry was the answer, we will count social security taxes in our income tax revenue and not as a separate Trust Fund, as FDR expected. Besides we needed a star wars program to allow the Military/Industrial Complex to grow stronger. And those banker rules that FDR imposed during the depression, well we can cut those banks a little slack, Gee, with such maneuvers, the gen Xers enjoyed the easy money available to their parents. So live continued, we had streaks of good money, a government surplus in Bill's years. Hooray! we can pay off the National Debt and the Federal Reserves makes no interest on it. Generations of the future will see a better day. Right, wrong again. Bill does not pay off the debt and he cuts the banksters even more slack. Then we have a big problem with 9/11. The bankers come to our aid, cut interest rates, lend people more than they can afford to pay back, all in the name of helping America rebound. Well, not quite, it was helping America to become a debt slave through that infamous " Predatory Lending". More debt for all became our motto. Two credit cards in every pot! What more could you hope for? a better life with honor and integrity, get outta here! I want my new i phone, i pad internet access and American idol.
So it goes. We need to ask ourselves if our families, our neighbors, and our communities will be better if we go along to get along or if we share in the responsibility of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I side with the latter and will take small steps to restore sanity to my life. If we all did... who knows what can happen.
Sorry for the long post.
