Another earthquake felt in Kansas

"Around 3:50 a.m., another earthquake hit many areas of Kansas.

. . .

One man in South Wichita says it was so strong it knocked him to the ground."

This was felt in Topeka, it woke me up at 4:00 and I've been up ever since. I know I heard mice in the walls or something, but it's the house..as I laid in bed on our 2nd floor I felt the bed shift in very slight, sudden movements. Very unsettling

Interesting to me is the fact that there is this bizarre ice storm all around the same time as these earthquakes started last week. The forecast started out trying to forecast snow and ice but it backed off, like they were trying to get something going. Then day by day over Thanksgiving the ice appeared out of nowhere, not forecasted until just a few hours before it would hit. Seems too much coincidence a major ice storm with a bullseye directly over the earthquake area. Traveled to the area for the holiday and nearly got stranded in SW KS but luckily flew out of GCK on Friday. Otherwise I'd still be iced in there. Not to mention the bizarre rain and flooding that preceded in N TX and OK. Same areas in OK that just had flooding now have ice.

I agree. As much as it is unfortunately becoming a regular for me here in Wichita, it is still unsettling every time it happens.

Yeah, we've had ice here in Wichita since Thanksgiving night, but they were forecasting it here for us for quite a while at least.

4.5 earthquake rattles Kansas, Oklahoma

"There are no immediate reports of damage, but the quake was felt throughout much of the state and into Kansas.

. . .

The quakes come after a 4.7-magnitude temblor hit northern Oklahoma on Nov. 19. That earthquake prompted state regulators to shut down some oil and gas wastewater disposal wells in the area and reduce the volume at others."

So, I got to thinking about the 3 feet after I turned off my computer and was getting ready for bed and realized, that didn't seem right. I just did a calculation using a tool that converts km to feet and it actually comes out to 16,404.2 feet or 3.106856 miles. It appears that the article that quote came out of originally has now removed that 3 foot remark. It was updated at 7:15 a.m.

Here's a screenshot where someone caught it was supposed to be 3 miles in the comments section:

Experts say it’s only a matter of time before the “big one” shakes Oklahoma

"Oklahoma is no longer known as the state where the wind comes sweeping down the plains. Now, the Sooner State also leads the world in seismic activity.

This year, more than 5,000 earthquakes have been recorded and studied in our state.

. . .

However, experts say earthquakes in Oklahoma will likely increase in magnitude over time.

. . .

'It's unclear exactly how high we might go, and the predictions are upper 5-6 range for most things that I've seen,' Todd Halihan, a researcher from OSU, says.

. . .

'Underneath any of these urban areas, whether it's Stillwater, Cushing, Oklahoma City, Guthrie, these cities are not built to seismic standards. They're not in L.A.' Halihan said.

. . .

'We have a lot of buildings that were built with earthquakes not even on the radar screen, so we would expect probably a fair bit of damage,' Halihan said.

. . .

'March of this year, we issued a directive that applied to over 300 disposal wells that dispose into the Arbuckle formation that said prove that you are not in the basement, in other words, you haven't drilled too deep,' Skinner says. 'So the idea was to dial back the total volume for the area that's going down to a pre-seismicity level.'

. . .

There is no research saying if the earthquakes will stop or when the big one could hit."

Wondering if the shifting ground in California is also playing a part in the eq's in OK?...
I feel very small quakes in N TX a couple times each week...less than a 2 on the scale...but noticeable if one pays attention...also the ones of magnitude 2-4 are starting to become noticed now occurring at least 2+ times a month

Someone else had also wondered if there was a connection between the two. It is interesting that both are occurring at the same time. One of my theories on these earthquakes is that there is pressure coming from both edges of the plate, putting the pressure towards the middle of the plate and that is why we are seeing earthquakes in Oklahoma. Kind of like taking a plastic ruler and bending both ends, the break most likely will occur in the middle.

Re: NC Oklahoma/SC Kansas Earthquake Thread: Swarming Occurring in Wichita City Limits - 1st Earthquakes Ever To Occur In City Limits
KSN updated their article. In the recent update, I found a very interesting graph representing the history of 3.0 or higher earthquakes in Kansas/Oklahoma. From that graph:

1990 - 1
1991 - 2
1992 - 2
1993 - 1
1994 - 1
1995 - 4
1996 - 0
1997 - 1
1998 - 3
1999 - 3
2000 - 0
2001 - 1
2002 - 4
2003 - 1
2004 - 2
2005 - 1
2006 - 3
2007 - 2
2008 - 2
2009 - 20
2010 - 41
2011 - 63

So, clearly it has become obvious that something began to change in 2009. It would be interesting if we can find the correlating fact. Did they change the way that wastewater was being disposed of in that year? As reported previously, wastewater had been injected for the last 60 years without causing earthquakes.

So, what happened in 2009?

Re: NC Oklahoma/SC Kansas Earthquake Thread: Swarming Occurring in Wichita City Limits - 1st Earthquakes Ever To Occur In City Limits
The earthquake area does cross over into South Central Kansas and are considered, at least in my opinion, to be part of the larger swarming area that goes from South Central Kansas into North Central Oklahoma.

Here are the statistics for the South Central Kansas area since January 1, 2015, through today:

1,348 earthquakes

When you take the South Central Kansas and North Central Oklahoma area earthquakes together, here are the statistics since January 1, 2015:

3,472 earthquakes

Based on the chart I posted originally on November 20, 2015, the uptick in earthquakes in South Central Kansas and North Central Oklahoma began in 2009.

Here are the statics for South Central Kansas from 2009 through the present:

2,135 earthquakes

When you take the South Central Kansas and North Central Oklahoma earthquakes together from 2009 through the present, here are the statistics that you get:

5,521

Re: NC Oklahoma/SC Kansas Earthquake Thread: Swarming Occurring in Wichita City Limits - 1st Earthquakes Ever To Occur In City Limits
Since doing my research on the earthquake trend for South Central Kansas and North Central Oklahoma since 2009 yesterday, I have two theories that have been running through my mind after seeing a visual representation for these earthquakes.

Ks Ok EQ

Yesterday, I linked to a screenshot showing earthquakes for this area since 2009, the year we began to see an uptick in earthquakes for this part of the country. I have since loaded it as a smilie (above) to discuss my theories.

As you can see, the area in question looks an awful lot like a caldera. This could very well be an unknown or new caldera volcano getting ready to go off.

Or it could also be the oil reservoir that the oil in this area of the country is being drained from. If it is an oil reservoir, could it be that it has been drained to near depletion and we are seeing the beginnings of the area in question collapsing into a huge giant sinkhole or perhaps numerous sinkholes throughout the earthquake area due to a large reservoir being drained leaving behind a giant cavern that cannot support the land above it.

To show the stark difference from prior years to the 2009-2015 years, here are the statistics for the same exact areas in South Central Kansas and North Central Oklahoma for the years 2000-2008:

2 whole earthquakes

Erin Brockovich weighs-in on Oklahoma earthquakes

"A well-known environmental activist is reaching out to those who have been affected by the recent earthquakes in Oklahoma.

Erin Brockovich posted to her Facebook page on Monday that the damage reports she received from residents was 'indicative of a much more serious and long-term problem.'

Brockovich is urging property owners to email her if they have damage from the frequent earthquakes."
