U.S. Warns Italy Over Potential Attacks in Rome. Venues “such as churches, synagogues, restaurants, theatres and hotels” in both Rome and Milan

The Foreign Office says there is a “heightened threat of a terrorist attack globally” against UK interests and British nationals, from groups motivated by the conflicts in Iraq and Syria.

“We always take such signals of alarm very seriously, especially when they come from the United States”, said Paolo Gentiloni, Italy’s foreign minister.

“This makes the difference”, Gentiloni added in reference to the security note issued by the embassy earlier in the day warning that St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome and the Duomo and La Scala in Milan are among potential targets for terrorist attacks.

The message from the State Department urged U.S. citizens to “remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings”.
