Great.

Now I'm going to have to resist the urge to walk up to a bell ringer and ask, "How do you spell moran?" Or, "What smells like A1 steak sauce?"
"Do you know what it means to pine something?"
"Do you know how to shave yourself?" "Do you have dehydrated water stockpiled?"

I really don't think I have ever heard that last one. Of course if you have a way to get C1 and O2 you can call it whatever the freak you what, just mix it together.

There are good and bad points in every charity but SVA has as far as I knew been the best. They were the one who worked the hardest on 9/11 and don't say they did not, my daughter was working there.
Sorry I got a headache

These are the times that tries men's and
women's souls!

May we come though it victorious!

Call me a grinch. I give thousands of dollars to individual needy people, but very little to organizations now. I like to know where my money is going.

I have to agree that the Salvation Army takes advantage of traditions that they condemn, but celebrate them in the name of tax free money.

The same deal with the Starbucks cups.

Since when do Christians associate pagan traditions with the teachings of Christ?

Yes . . . and? This is not related to your last post regarding a private company in the UK.

And this link doesn't indicate anything negative regarding Salvation Army. It does however, show how generous the public is.

Oh hell it's Monday morning and I gotta get going.

Argue with you later chuckle

What do people think is supposed to happen to the surplus goods donated to thrift shops? Landfills don't want it. Charities have to do something with it. It is baled and sold (currently a whopping 7 cents a pound at current prices which fluctuate but never go beyond .20 cents per pound...boy they sure are raking in the bucks at those prices aren't they) to textile companies who sell the bales to a variety of places. The bales don't all go to Africa. Would people rather these clothes just be thrown away? That's what would happen to them.

How about donate your time at a thrift store and come up with a better idea instead of just posting how wrong you think it is to resell, resell, resell, and etc this endless supply of clothing? What would YOU do with it? Hmm? Good luck with coming up with something better to do with the surplus.

Speaking as a director of a thrift store, yes the public is VERY generous. At times, almost too generous. I sure wish they wouldn't donate garbage along with usable items. Close to 50% of everything that is donated is garbage. Charities are stuck with that bill...and it isn't cheap. We have to recoup that cost somehow.

Thanks for sticking up for us Sloan :)

What you're saying is that the real issue is consumerism.

You know...Christmas.

Maybe if we stopped buying all this junk we wouldn't need to recycle it.

Companies beg for money to make sure kids have toys for Christmas so they grow up to be good consumers. Then they donate those used toys to thrift stores that make a killing because they are buying at 7-20 cents a pound and don't pay taxes.

To you naysayers.
Thanks for your posts, everyone has an opinion.

It is 100% volunteer BTW, at least the kettle collection here is all volunteer.
I'm told 100% of the money collected in the kettles here
stay on the island and directly help those in need.

There is a SA homeless shelter here.
Winters are cold, they need to pay the heat bills.
We all breathe the same air.

It's completely out of hand. Speaking of *begging for money* we actually had a telemarketing company that called our thrift store a few days back asking us to make a $250 donation to the fraternal order of police ... so that a police officer can take a kid shopping for christmas.

This problem comes from EVERYWHERE...not just charities. AND it's not just a christmas problem. It's a people have to buy and have all this stuff...like they're filling some void...

"The fundamental question of our time is whether the West has the will to survive. ... Our own fight for the West does not begin on the battlefield — it begins with our minds, our wills, and our souls... Americans, Poles, and the nations of Europe value individual freedom and sovereignty. We must work together to counter forces, whether they come from inside or out, from the South or the East, that threaten over time to undermine these values and to erase the bonds of culture, faith and tradition that make us who we are. I am here today not just to visit an old ally, but to hold it up as an example for others who seek freedom and who wish to summon the courage and the will to defend our civilization." ~President Donald J Trump

SO its a for profit private organization. A business that makes money off the poor. Now isn't that a conflict of interest? I could argue this organization has a vested interest in keeping these people poor, as that is their model of making money.
 Quoting: KIT 69633446

In my lengthy work with charities I figured out that a good half of the UK's economy is tied up with making money and creating jobs off the back of other people's misery.

Put charities and their workers into manual trades (which the country desperately needs) and they'll stop creating poor and miserable people who are their lifeblood currently.
