Musician's Dilemma, Seeking Advice
So I'm in college and want to be a musician, playing all of my life. The problem is, I have a roommate so I can't really practice that much, plus we live in a basement suite so there are people up above too.

I would love a place of my own but in my budget they are all apartments where you can't make noise, or basements or shared houses with others. I just want to express myself and sing, it's so frustrating! I need to practice to get better in order to do gigs, and want to practice 100% not singing half ass in a quiet voice.

I'm in a small town so there's nowhere you can go to practice like a studio or anything

any advice is really appreciated.

As far as singing.

You're fucked unless you tell your parents to quit bitching.

20+ year pro musician here.

You're in a small town. Go into the woods or the fields or parks and use the great outdoors as your practice room. Unless there are man eating mutant squirrels that hate music there, I think you'll be alright.

Or..... most colleges have a music department. Talk to the faculty there and see if you can get in some time in their practice rooms. Some professors are really cool about things like that, especially if you're already a student there. Some colleges allow students to use different facilities for an extra fee while some are strict about students only using the facilities pertinent to their majors.

Or..... talk to your roommate & the neighbors. Figure out their schedules and work around them.

You have options but I think your best bet is to ask around your college.

good luck!

Practice room or ask a professor if you can sing in a classroom.

I loved singing in the laundry room at school. Acoustics were good and you can check pitch against the hum of the dryers.

Re: Musician's Dilemma, Seeking Advice
I'm a musician too, and a lot of bands who don't have private homes to practice at will pitch in together to rent a small warehouse space and practice there. If it gets cold you wear coats and use propane heaters. Been there, done that, and it works really well. If you're not a death metal musician, churches, VA centers and rotary clubs will often give you a practice space at set times, sometimes for no money. Colleges have practice rooms also. Hope this helps.

Yeah it would be work around people's schedules but my roommate never leaves his room, & so does the lady upstairs. I practice outside when the weather is good, but winter is here and it's damn cold. This a tiny town, under 10k people, and the college doesn't have a music program.

I used to sneak around and practice in empty classrooms at night, the janitors didn't mind usually..
