theres only so much food and ammo you can have in your house, some people after that still have wealth that they would like to store. people thousands of years ago thought it was worth something, maybe a few decades after the crash people will still need something of value to trade

I remember when it was worth A LOT MORE!

It is worth so much because there are a lot of stupid people in this world and they like shiny things.

With the value of gold (in USD) at a high of about $1900 5 years ago and now at $1060,
now would be a bad time to cash out anyway.

Ammo, Guns, Food and Fuel. That is what will have value when shit hits the fan.

Absolutely nothing. The only items of value in such a scenario will be those that have some practical, real world utility.

When people are in extreme situations with low morale, when gold and money are wroth nothing.

Tobacco, Alcohol, Water, Food and Medicine become top priority.

I believe in gold, heirloom seeds and salt.

I will accept all in trade for drinkable water.

When you need water...make certain you have gold, seeds or salt to pay for it!

People with an excess of supplies will be the first the hordes target. Trade will eventually sort out, and throughout history, a medium of exchange has always needed to develop to facilitate trade.

If you have an excess of one supply, but want something from another party that has an excess of a different supply...if that party doesn't want what you have you're fucked without a common medium of exchange.

A medium of exchange is how groups of people with different assets to trade are able to.

Sure, stock up on supplies, but once you're done get some PMs. It's the ultimate hedge and safe bet. If you have to leave in a hurry due to radiation, war or whatever, anyone who thinks they will get very far lugging round 2,000 tampons and 1,000 rolls of toilet paper on their back will be sorry.
