An 'Assault Rifle' is a select-fire military weapon like an M-16 or M-4. Most ordinary people can't own one here. An 'Assault Weapon', as defined by CA, is a semiautomatic rifle like an AR-15 that is on a list of named firearms, and/or has a detachable magazine with a capacity of greater than 10 rounds. They can be owned here if registered during a period that ended many years ago or by law enforcement. An AR-15 model that is not on the list of 'Assault Weapons' and has a magazine lock and a magazine capacity of no more than 10 rounds can be owned by anyone, because the 10 rd mag and mag lock (bullet button) mean it is NOT an 'Assault Weapon' under California law.
