I would guess for mass, an SUV has more tonnage to punch through a blockade, say police cars bloacking road. And more ground clearance for going over curbs and such.

Not saying there wernt more suspects just giving why I think they went with suv

And probably they knew the rental would make it less easy to quickly identify them than if they used the family car.
