I do know what you are referring to, so I can relate. Whilst it is probably a condition for life, I do feel the transition between states can become seamless and leave no trauma.
Effectively though, a person has to be able to hold the idea everything is real and likewise nothing is real yet still be able to draw emotional energy without becoming vacuumed completely.
