Former US attorney not surprised by FBI terrorism investigations in Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. (KAKE) -- A former U.S. attorney weighs in on the threat of terrorists right here in Kansas. This comes after Congressman Mike Pompeo told KAKE News earlier this week that the FBI is investigating Islamic terrorism threats in the state.

"The FBI director has told us that there are dozens of investigations taking place in Kansas with respect to radical Islamic terrorism," said Pompeo.

An FBI Kansas City division spokesperson says they cannot confirm or deny that there are dozens, but a former U.S. attorney Randy Rathbun says that number could be legitimate.

"It doesn't surprise me," he said. "The reason you haven't heard about that is because the FBI is precluded from ever mentioning that they're a part of an investigation."

Rathbun says it's fairly normal for the FBI to brief high ranking officials including congressmen like Pompeo on these threats.
