HINSDALE, Ill. -- A month after a small trash can explosion at the Metra commuter train station in Hinsdale, police in the western suburb are reporting a new threat: an anonymous letter that portends another explosion in a public space.

NBC5's Amy Jacobson reported Monday night that businesses in the west suburb recieved a letter from Hinsdale officials asking them to be on alert following the recent threat.

In a press statement issued Monday, police asked the public to call 911 if they notice an unattended backpack, briefcase, bag, box or anything that could conceal an explosive device; they are also asking the public to keep away from any unattended object they spot.

Police did not say who received the threatening letter. And while investigators take the threat seriously, they say it isn’t imminent.

In September, an "improvised explosive device" was placed in a trash can at Hinsdale’s Metra stop on the BNSF Railway line, authorities said.

No one was injured in the small blast, and it caused minimal damage, police said.

The FBI, along with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the U.S. Postal Inspector, also are investigating the September incident.

Anyone with information about the incidents may also call Hinsdale police at 630-789-7070.
