I'm trying to imagine how this started the fire. It must have been moving pretty fast, even after being slowed down in the atmosphere. Wouldn't it have exploded and made a pretty big crater as it dived into the earth? Seems like meteorites were thought to have possibly be the cause of the great Chicago fire too, maybe it's one theory. I'm still not clear on exactly how the meteorite could have done this. |

Not only the Chicago fire, the Peshtigo Wisconsin fire the same evening. Practically took out the entire town in minutes. From wikipedia: The Peshtigo Fire in Peshtigo, Wisconsin has the distinction of being the conflagration that caused the most deaths by fire in US history. While more people perished in the fire and resulting collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, most of the victims of that disaster were killed by collapsing buildings rather than the flames themselves. The Peshtigo Fire is mostly forgotten, having occurred on October 8, 1871, the same date as the much more renowned Great Chicago Fire. Across Lake Michigan, the towns of Holland, Michigan and Manistee, Michigan also burned down on the same day. |

Remember ..that back in those days they used alot of Kerosene for their lamps, there must have been alot of kerosene stored for use. If a hot meteor comes in and hits a can of kerosene ..Kaboom ! |

Quoting: Muse 6242Fascinating info as well, 147760--was unaware of the coinciding devastating MI and WI fires.. Yes. Very interesting indeed. Do not believe anything I say or write.
