been tried in cyclone areas here (domes) .

weren't all that impressive, they are crap to heat and cool, much space is wasted.

tornados are bit different though.

you either have a sacrificial house with a storm cellar, or a full rated home, which costs five times the amount to construct.

the edge beams , properly constucted reinforced walls with one inch re bar every 4 inches tie downs from edge beam bottom to wall plate , with full rated hardwood only non trussed roof will stand 30 mins of sustained 300kph winds, if built correctly.

sand from beach stripped paint of my house built like that in yazi, but it held structurally.

the local schools concrete dome collapsed in a heap.

Re: Dome Homes to Be Safer in These Tornado Days...
Dome shapes are structurally sound, I agree. But, domes inherently "implode" versus exploding. When I was designing munitions, all of the explosives and finished products were stored in dome shaped buildings so that in case of a failure, the building would collapse down and in, limiting the amount of collateral damage outside the structure.

If you are in a dome shaped house and there is a structural failure, your home just became your grave.

Maybe...I've seen twisters suck the asphalt right off the road bed and toss railroad cars around like toys. Domes might win against a small tornado, but not the big ones...you must go underground!

This is my "Dome Construction" fund-raiser right here. Simply buy an MP3 and that will go to funding an educational dome home in Tennessee.

Dome Shape Survives Direct Tornado Hit – On May 24, 2011 in Blanchard, OK, this house, which is a thin shell concrete dome but not a Monolithic Dome, was hit by an EF4 or EF5 tornado. Although badly damaged by heavy, flying debris, the dome shell survived. That, we think, is a testament to the dome shape. Conventional homes hit by this tornado were flattened and swept off their foundations.

Monolithic domes are superior. The one in the OP link is geodesic.

I've been thinking about taking the class in Italy Texas at Monolithic. There are some amazing monolithic domes.... Look at this thing!

the one in the OP thread is a stylistic logo and representation of a dome because geodesics are the most recognizable form ...

I want a Monolithic for my living quarters... but I've personally been inside many types of domes and they've all been appealing to me in different ways...

There's one that you can rent as a B&B in New Paltz, NY that rotates to follow the sun... that one was very cool...

The only kind of dome you want is the cheapest build. Because the safest place would be in a basement with an even deeper root cellar.

If I was living there and you could build a home, you'd build a deluxe basement home and root cellar, then put some extra storage on top with a yurt, because it probably won't last.

Subterranean (or burmed) homes are the best. Safe from natural forces, and naturally insulated from temperature changes.

But they don't show off your wealth, so they aren't popular.

Re: Dome Homes to Be Safer in These Tornado Days...
the problem is simply solved ... don't live where tornados frequent ... hello

IMO Frank Lloyd Wright had it right ... conform to the environment that you live in ... position your home to conform to the lay of the land ... you are NOT going to win when you defy Nature ... not even with rebar and steel beams and guy wires ... and to believe you can is delusional

no god is not going to "protect" you if you don't use the brains you were given. Your home is your "shelter" - you can't throw a box on a flat piece of land, where tornados frequent, and expect it not to be splintered by hundred mile an hour winds ... I'm tired of paying high insurance rate, so idiots can RE build their home in the same stupid location.

There are plenty of places in America that are not affected by high winds ... floods, and aren't on fault lines ... research the property you are considering building on ... often just building just a few hundred feet away, behind a knoll will keep you safe.

use your brian, you morans

Sunny Daze... there's seems to be a growing feeling that no place is really safe... I lived in NJ for a long time and it was a pretty good place to be... but weird storms and hurricanes caused us to be displaced for weeks at a time 3 out of the past 5 years...

she became a safe haven no more...

Re: Dome Homes to Be Safer in These Tornado Days...
It's not that difficult to engineer a traditional build home to withstand some serious wind force.

The problem is, most home builders build a house as cheap as possible to make as much money as possible.

A couple simple things to beef up any new build house;

add hurricane straps anchored into a concrete foundation.

add engineered reinforced roof trusses, securely clamped into the exterior walls.

Instead of cheap asphalt roofing shingles, add high wind resistant euroshield rubber roof tiles.

Just a few simple things done while building a house will protect against much more severe storms.

Actually, if one does a self contract new build and it meets certain energy efficiency & safety ratings, the U.S. Government has many tax credit opportunities. These alone can save 10s of thousands on a well built house.

Re: Dome Homes to Be Safer in These Tornado Days...
OP: per square foot, domes [especially geodesic] are far cheaper to build than a conventional structure. They also come in really great kit forms so even an inexperienced builder can throw a basic shell up in under a week with a couple of buddies to help. Average price for a 30' dome kit runs under $10,000 - most people build them on an acre or two with a simple concrete slab, but a great option and way to increase area is with a poured basement foundation which gives you the best of both worlds.

Kits arrive at the building site loaded onto a flatbed truck. All parts are clearly labels and it's pretty much like a giant erector set made of wood. Assembly tools are simple with plywood sheathing panels attached with either deck screws or a nail gun. Skylights are popular options and these not only give you light but a means for an indoor garden [which is how geo's are frequently used]. Solar panels offer not only electricity but power hot-water systems.

Usually, a 4' retaining wall around the base is used as a means of squaring off the roofline for an entrance. This wall also allows for extensions so you can add a conventional box-shaped room anywhere around the base. But, as with anything, from roughly you can spend as much as you want!

Structural components [and interior finishes] vary widely, but self-contained power and plumbing systems are readily optional [and of course add a lot to the overall cost!].... but some of those options are incredible! Floorplans can be simple or complex and there is little need to "Waste" a lot of space if you start with a good design. Insulation is also not a huge factor if you install an interior reflective surface and since it's largely an open-area
design, once you reach an ambient tempt it's easier to maintain than a house divided into a lot of small rooms.

If you're wondering why I know so much about domes... I was just researching them as a possibility for retirement living off the grid. Finding the right land is my starting point.

the old houses and old buildings , old structures that no longer serve us will be tear down or vaporize with ET help. ETs will first build us a place before we can repopulate the new 5d earth. we will be taken somewhere to live temporarily while Earth is having her ascension period. 10+ magnitude quakes and destruction chaos all over the place during her ascension. This is why Ships will come down to pick us up and taken into the ship for safety and we will live up there for a time. then we get sent back to repopulate the new changed earth. This Brand New 5d earth is what jesus talks about in the bible.

The New Jeruslem city is a gigantic city-sized floating Ship. Jesus's headquarter is not just an ordinary rooted house on the ground. He makes it so it will be very advanced and very crystal-like and will be able to float. im pretty sure it's a big big Ship.

infact ETs have motherships that are as big as a State or a planet. or a continent. now u know
