Extreme Arctic temperature anomaly: 40° C above seasonal temperatures!
The Arctic is known for being extremely cold in the winter months especially in the middle of the ice pack. Winter temperatures can drop below −50 °C (−58 °F) over large parts of the Arctic.

As such seeing temperatures almost above freezing point in the Arctic circle was a bit of a shocker!

This surge in warm air was caused by the combined pull of 2 low pressure systems rotating counterclockwise. Those low pressure cells were following the trail of the Jet Stream. The Jet stream is responsible for this extreme event as it streched from the Mid-Lattitudes to the Arctic circle.

Such an extreme elongation is very rare, however it actually happened on 30 december 2015!

Holy shit! 'A rare event' how rare? Has the even happened before? That looks really really wrong.

I have been saving temperature maps of the arctic on a daily basis for years, and i can say that the erratic behaviour of the jetstream is not something new!

However this is really something else i don't recall ever seeing it like this before!

shocked

Yeah..
Well, the high today in my part of Ohio is 32F.

So. Fuck the Arctic. Someone go drive a SUV, I'm chilly.

Nonsense. The World is just fine.
We might all die, but The Earth will keep on spinning, basking in the light of Sol.

Do you have to be a scientist to click on an image and then save it aferwords?

No i'm not a scientist i just took a habit since 2011 to save maps of temperature anomalies and atmospheric conditions.

I also save spaceweather charts when they are relevant.

You don't have to be scientist to this.

No it's the thinning of the Arctic ice that causes the jetstream to change and move more northwards.

And this in turn is related to gulf stream and the global oceanic circulation belt which is changing or slowing down because the surface of the sea has warmed up!

This is caused by the ongoing pole shift i think.
