Successful Rescue Mission Frees 17 Miners From New York Salt Mine (VIDEO)

An emergency call was reported around 11:40 p.m. Wednesday night. The mine employees are stuck “775 feet down” in an elevator shaft, according to a CBS affiliate who spoke with the Ithaca Fire Department.

A crane is headed to the scene to help in the rescue. News 4 will have more information as it becomes available.

The Lansing Fire Department, along with the Cargill Mine staff, have been working since about 10:20 p.m. local time Wednesday to free the trapped workers. The miners are stuck at least 775 feet below the ground in an access shaft, according to the Ithaca Fire Department, which is also assisting officials in the rescue operation.

Emergency staff has been in constant contact with the miners. First responders have been lowering food, blankets and other supplies down to the workers as the rescue operation continues.

Tompkins County Emergency Response has requested a crane to be delivered to the site. Klein told the radio station that officials hope the crane will be able to get workers out “two or three” at a time.

Not sure if it is just reporting that brings stuff to light, but...do you ever notice how, when one disaster of a specific nature happens, many more start happening after that? All the elevator-related tragedies happening, lately...you notice that? It is bizarre.
