Yes, they are more expensive. But if you let one of each plant go to seed, you will save money by collecting and growing your own seeds. I have a wood burning stove and I made a wood shed out of some pallets. It's a little difficult to find ones that match. I recommend folks study, and identify the weeds in their environment, examine them carefully, with cultivation they can be an excellent source of food, and they grow like weeds. Beware > Some are poisonous. My Chickens have shown me a wild grain that grows fairly abundantly around my place, watch what they eat, you might be surprised what you find. |

I have six feet of snow in my yard and tonight's low is zero degrees. It's January! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1699826 This is the perfect time to think about gardening. I am a master gardener, will help anyone out that is just getting started. We gardened 2 acres with orchards 2 small greenhouses, chicken coop and rabbit houses. Canned all our own food and raised our own meat. {Sold it all to our son this yr and moved 10 miles} All the books are arriving, in about a month you can start your own flats. We buy all our seeds from Baker Seeds in US aka rareseeds com they are all organic heirloom. For those that cant have a huge garden, don't toss the idea of a straw bale for your plantings to go in. Google it, there are alot of websites explaining it. If you get your gardens in early enough, dont forget about ordering enough seeds for a fall garden. Start that in Aug. or there abouts. In zones 5-6-7 first thing to go in the ground as soon as your chance of frost is over, potatoes, peas, brussels, cabbage, kohlrabi, broccoli, cauliflower, raddish- you put the lengthy growing seeds in. We try to sneak it about 2-3 weeks before the time table says we are all clear. Yes, all of the above can be planted in a hay bale. Canning is the most rewarding habit you could ever take up. Sure its work, but there is nothing like eating your own veggies in Dec. We used all the rabbit pooh for fertilizer and compost tea. There were never chemicals on our farm. We will have a small garden this year, but all the flower beds will be full of herbs. C'mon spring!!!!! Last Edited by theyrcoming on 01/10/2016 04:49 AM SoOn!! |

I saved the seeds from a family owned roadside stand variety that was large and flavorful. It outperformed 25 other varieties that I tried. Once you find the strains that thrives in your climate you are set. |

Straw Bale Garden User ID: 69781773 United States 01/10/2016 07:15 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | This past season was our first attempt at growing veggies. I studied a lot about gardens beforehand and I began to realize the popularity of the Straw Bale Garden...NO DIGGING. Not only is there no digging required, very little to no weeding and you don't have to stoop so low to manage the garden. In late winter, we began by putting down enough landscape cloth to cover the ground for 12 wheat straw bales (two rows of 6 bales each butted end-to-end). Then I watered in a high content nitrogen type fertilizer daily for ten days to get the bales to begin to decompose (the decomposed bales later feed your plants). After about two weeks, we placed about an inch plus of top soil along the tops of the bales and lightly watered in on a regular basis, we watered the tops of the bales. We planned out what veggies should be planted where and for the vine growers (tomatoes and cantaloupes) we drove iron fence posts behind the bales. We then bought a roll of aluminum wire and weaved the wire from post-to-post to for a lattice to attached the vine growers to. After the threat of frost we set our plants into the straw bales. We had a great garden!! Cost: bales about $3 ea, steel posts $5 ea, aluminum wire $2.50/roll and one roll was plenty. Tomatoes, cantaloupe, watermelon, kale and lettuce did extremely well. |

I made a small one that sits in a warm corner of my kitchen. When done properly there is no smell. I sourced materials from Goodwill's and Re-stores. there are many types of bins to choose from but I went with what some one called creepy pants. It allows air flow and trickle through of the processed materials. I made a pvc stand for it. [link to www.redwormcomposting.com] going into my second year and it has produced thousands of worm from the initial 60 i bought and produced two 5 gal. buckets of really nice worm dirt. This year i split the worms and started two large composters. |
