Lets have a thread on budget gardening, and help for those in city limits
i know we've had threads on this before but lets start fresh here, we've had some nu stupid laws go in effect re prepping and living off the grid and shit, and times are gettin tougher for folks--food prices are sky rocketing too.

this yr im box gardening again but im expanding - yeah i have a minifarm but i cant rototil the property my spine is fucked, i was happy with he small 8 pallet sized i had last yr and im addin more this year....

my other threads were successful in helpin glpers out
Thread: GLP Recession Proof Meals - Cooking goes a long way in lieu of buying crap

Thread: For those unemployed/who asked: Ideas to supplement your income or start your own business.

so lets have some ideas for folks to save money on food be it via gardening, solar shit, atrium's, or butchering or whatever.

ii went on craigs list last year lookn for pallets - even tho up here in the sticks we have very few factories, and they do give away pallets but not as many as i needed - and in harrisburg the factories beg for you to takem.

so we went and got a fuckload. i made my chicken coop outta them. placed poles in the ground, used quickcrete to secure it, then laid the pallets over the poles. stapled chicken wire to it. bada bing done. got the ckn wire for free off freecycle.org if you never heard of it - go there, sign up under an email specifically for it as ull get tons of mail. put ur zipcode in. add the towns near you that ur willing to travel. now they have OFFER posts, what ppl are giving away - everythings free ur not allowed to charge. then theres WANTED posts, what ppl are lookn for - if you have it reply and help out. on freecycle ppl give away anything from bunkbeds, to furniture to cars, trailer homes, auto parts, tires, boats frigs freezers washers dryers air conditioners u name it - now its income tax time - best time to get on it, as ppl will get their refunds get nu shit and give away their old. *next best time is right after christmas - i just saw led tvs for give away bc they got bigger screened ones. computers and laptops also were given away as well.

anyway...lost rack here - i use the other pallets for the box gardening. got the soil from the amish its like petrified cow shit, real dark and has coal soil mixed in it too. (and at end of season from garden places like tractor supply, etc they leave out the bag soil, by end of season its wet and mushy, they knock thee price down to pennies on the dollar, see the mgr and you will get a deal on them if you wanna use the bag soil for it.

hafta say - my garden didnt do shit this year. everyone complained - something happened, nobodys garden did well up here.

**when i got my hens tractor supply had them little condos, theyre like over 300 bucks and made like shit i tell ya, but i went after easter and they had no more in stock, id hafta buy online & have it shipped to store. they had a floor model outside that wasput together crappy, had a few nicks in it...looked sorta like this & priced like 380 or something - it was green and to hold 2-4 hens. i bought 8 lol.
[link to www.tractorsupply.com]
so i cut a deal. i got it for 50.00 no joke

this spring im adding more hens. i got a rooster for free, hes a cochin, and a prick. hes smaller than the hens and hey kick the shit out of him. ha!

im gettin some ducks, my son & i are making them a "pool" pond, small one (duck eggs are the shit) - we're getting turkeys too one male one female, 2 goats male/female bc i wanna make goat cheese, and my son and i will get pigs, raise them and sell them for butchering.

anyhow last yr i transplanted my strawberries to a hill i made. this year will be nice for them.

im gettin all my fruit bushes, trees, and makin an orchard in the back.

ppl last yr stopped by my house to pick the cherries off my tree. i had my dad make some wine out of it. came out ok - im not a wine drinker but...my pear tree didnt do well this yr. last yr it was a good yield. dunno why - chemtrails? bees? but this yr i will have a bee hive. definitely. now im gonna have him make strawberry wine - yeah baby, dads gotta fkn stillery in his basement hehehe he gets free grapes from the armstreong valley winery end of season they give it to him free he loads his ford down. id given him 5-6 grape plants in 07, he grafted them, planted more and now has his own small orchard.

ok lets start posting.

I guess some good advice is if you're buying seeds, get the heirloom variety. Yes, they are more expensive. But if you let one of each plant go to seed, you will save money by collecting and growing your own seeds.

Peraonally I don't have much need for it: the few veggies I eat are cheaper (even organic) from the store than the effort and cost to grow it myself. Fruit I rately eat because fructosis is practically poison.
Eggs though...have been thinking about getting chickens...could use a bunch of pigs and cows to slaughter hahaha but ain't got the space for that!

see thats another thing we need to discuss - organic foods - i heard that organics in the supermarkets aint really and they charge up the ass for it.

bgs mkt up by me has no pink slime in their meats, no meat glue, and no arsenic on chickens they got sign in meat dept.

their meats are gotten from local farmers.

their veggies in sumer are also from locals - you dont see big titted sized green gmo peppers in bgs you see normal sized

now in winter they buy from their suppliers and u can tell the diff

but this mom/pop is all local bought so u know what ur gettin

supermarkets sell irradiated spinach and other shit

they have the cut fruits/veggies thhat got that chemical sprayed on it so it dont go to mush in a few days and that chemical causes cancer

Ok here is my contribution. Potatoes. My keyboard isn't working so excuse my typos If you have a source of dried leaves you can grow your own potatoes get your seed potatoes, some large plastic contractor strength trashbags, maybe a few bags of soil from walmart and some chopped up fall leaves that your lawnmower bagged up last fall store those leaves in the contractor bags and when it is potato planting time get your bags and decide where you want to place them in the yard for growing a sunny location is good old tires make good holders to place the bags in, but not really necessary once your bags are in place put a mixture of dirt and chopped leaves in it, maybe 50/50 for the first several inches in the bag. roll the edges of the bag down to a few inches above where you will plant the potatoes put your seed potatoes in the soil and cover with a inch of soil/leaves. You can probably put about four or five seed potatoes per bag each seed potato will make a plant and produce more potatoes As your plant grows, add more chopped leaves/soil to the bag leaving only some of the green plant showing don't let the plant flower on you snip the flowers off as you see them start You don't even have to add the soil to the leaves if you don't have some, the potatoes will grow in the leaves, they just need to remain covered So, as your plant grows, unroll some of the bag and add more chopped leaves to the bag. don't forget to water once in awhile (it might be a good idea to put a couple of small slits in bottom of bag for drainage)if you don't get rain at least weekly By summer (depending where you live) you should be able to reach down in there and pull you some new potatoes out to use when needed No need to harvest them all at once either. the plant usually starts to wilt when they are ready to harvest leave a few of the small ones in the bags over winter and they will sprout again next year they don't always get to be large size from what I found, but you can get some new size potatoes this way great for soups, stews, mashed, etc I've read hay can also be used instead of leaves with this method Also, the leaves will turn to a nice rich dirt the following year. You may have to replace the bags every year as they don't stay strong year round.

Pallets are great construction material.

I have a wood burning stove and I made a wood shed out of some pallets.

It's a little difficult to find ones that match.

I recommend folks study, and identify the weeds in their environment, examine them carefully, with cultivation they can be an excellent source of food, and they grow like weeds.

Beware > Some are poisonous.

My Chickens have shown me a wild grain that grows fairly abundantly around my place, watch what they eat, you might be surprised what you find.

In Aus, 'the Diggers Club', for heirloom seeds. I think they send overseas too.

Saw a thing awhile ago, (for those with limited space and money) where someone brought a bag of potting mix, laid bag down flat on the balcony, stabbed a few holes along the top, planted seedlings into the holes, instant garden lol

This is the perfect time to think about gardening.
I am a master gardener, will help anyone out that
is just getting started. We gardened 2 acres with orchards
2 small greenhouses, chicken coop and rabbit houses.
Canned all our own food and raised our own meat.
{Sold it all to our son this yr and moved 10 miles}
All the books are arriving, in about a month you can start your own flats.
We buy all our seeds from Baker Seeds in US aka rareseeds com
they are all organic heirloom.
For those that cant have a huge garden, don't toss the idea
of a straw bale for your plantings to go in. Google it, there are alot of websites explaining it.
If you get your gardens in early enough, dont forget about ordering enough seeds for a fall garden. Start that in Aug.
or there abouts.

In zones 5-6-7 first thing to go in the ground as soon as your chance of frost is over, potatoes, peas, brussels, cabbage, kohlrabi, broccoli, cauliflower, raddish- you put the lengthy growing seeds in. We try to sneak it about 2-3 weeks before the time table says we are all clear.
Yes, all of the above can be planted in a hay bale.

Canning is the most rewarding habit you could ever take up. Sure its work, but there is nothing like eating your own veggies in Dec.

We used all the rabbit pooh for fertilizer and compost tea.
There were never chemicals on our farm.

We will have a small garden this year, but all the flower beds will be full of herbs.
C'mon spring!!!!!

Finally found a strain of tomato that is virtually indestructible put out hundreds this year when many around me got few to none. I saved the seeds from a family owned roadside stand variety that was large and flavorful. It outperformed 25 other varieties that I tried. Once you find the strains that thrives in your climate you are set.

Re: Lets have a thread on budget gardening, and help for those in city limits
This past season was our first attempt at growing veggies. I studied a lot about gardens beforehand and I began to realize the popularity of the Straw Bale Garden...NO DIGGING.

Not only is there no digging required, very little to no weeding and you don't have to stoop so low to manage the garden.

In late winter, we began by putting down enough landscape cloth to cover the ground for 12 wheat straw bales (two rows of 6 bales each butted end-to-end). Then I watered in a high content nitrogen type fertilizer daily for ten days to get the bales to begin to decompose (the decomposed bales later feed your plants).

After about two weeks, we placed about an inch plus of top soil along the tops of the bales and lightly watered in on a regular basis, we watered the tops of the bales.

We planned out what veggies should be planted where and for the vine growers (tomatoes and cantaloupes) we drove iron fence posts behind the bales. We then bought a roll of aluminum wire and weaved the wire from post-to-post to for a lattice to attached the vine growers to.

After the threat of frost we set our plants into the straw bales. We had a great garden!!

Cost: bales about $3 ea, steel posts $5 ea, aluminum wire $2.50/roll and one roll was plenty.

Tomatoes, cantaloupe, watermelon, kale and lettuce did extremely well.

Start a worm bin to use up veggie scraps and recycle garden waste back into nutritious garden supplement. I made a small one that sits in a warm corner of my kitchen. When done properly there is no smell. I sourced materials from Goodwill's and Re-stores.

there are many types of bins to choose from but I went with what some one called creepy pants. It allows air flow and trickle through of the processed materials. I made a pvc stand for it.

[link to www.redwormcomposting.com]

going into my second year and it has produced thousands of worm from the initial 60 i bought and produced two 5 gal. buckets of really nice worm dirt. This year i split the worms and started two large composters.

edit to add re the worm bin......i used nylon men's jogging pants that was two layers of nylon and only had a couple of spots of mold pop up this fall. Empty the worms into a five gallon bucket then wash pants. Easy peasy.
