I am someone in the field who knows quite a bit about this story, Kepler, SETI and astrobiology in general.

I showed my credentials in this thread which I participated in discussing many of the same things discussed in this current thread. A lot of the questions some of you might have have been answered in that one.

As for pretty pictures.. It may come as a surprise to the layperson but telescopes are not built primarily to provide you with pretty pictures though such pictures are wonderful.

Modern astronomy is about collecting data, spectra, lightcurves from the light collected from distant objects. Studying that can tell us a whole lot about an object or group of objects even if we can not take detailed images of them so far (need bigger telescopes to do that!).

A good example of this are exoplanets which are usually accompanied by artist renderings.

We COULD have built something like the Terrestrial Planet Finder and Terrestrial Planet Imager which were to be instruments to follow up interesting things Kepler discovered a planned floatilla of space telescopes all linked together to form one giant telescope but that program was cancelled by Bush to pay for the "Constellation" program of human rated heavy lift rockets which too was cancelled.

Want pretty pictures of the "megastructure", pony up and tell your representatives in Congress you want a bigger budget for NASA so they can dust off those old plans.

For now this will have to do… A rendering of the "megastructure" by people who do such renderings…

BTW: The only reason we know about this mystery is because Kepler was launched. Kepler had been cancelled 5 times before it was finally launched and it narrowly escaped the budget ax that killed the Terresrial Planet Finder 3 years before Kepler was eventually launched in 2009.

Lesson: If you wanna find aliens, fund better telescopes.

The mainstream media have treated this story as though it was over. i.e.: "its not comets, but its probably not aliens" which is ludicrous to say at this point because even the people from SETI aren't ruling aliens out because they readily admit their ability to detect industrial activity at KIC8462852 aka "Alien Megastructure Star" aka "Tabby's Star" aka "WTF? Star" in their first observations was just to place an upper limit on how strong a signal the hypothetical aliens could be emitting.

We simply do not know what is causing the phenomena of KIC8462852 but the natural observations from colliding planets to comets have all been ruled out and that is very exciting!

However science moves a bit slower than a 24 hour news cycle so this hasn't reached the MSM headlines yet....

The key takeaway from the paper, in my view, is probably not the one the authors intended. It's actually a statement we find in the concluding section of the paper:
This comet family model does not explain the large dip observed around day 800 and treats it as unrelated to the ones starting at day 1500. The flux changes too smoothly and too slowly to be easily explained with a simple comet family model.
This remarkable acknowledgment should not be understated. The dip "around day 800" (from now on, the day-792 dip) is indeed large. It can't be dismissed as an amazing coincidence. To put it another way, "Ockham’s Razor tells us that it is very unlikely that one star will suffer two different mechanisms that are unique to that star" (Schaefer, 2016).


More at the link above. When all you're left with are aliens then aliens become a credible hypothesis, that seems to be where this stands now.

Well, it's also an equally good chance that the vastly superior alien species over there are benign and won't mind establishing trade routes with Humanity.

I refuse to let Hollywood's decades long overwhelmingly powerful "All space aliens are hell-bent on transforming Humans into animal like entities, or otherwise pure fricken evil!".
