Why was the civil war fought?
Every other country was able to end slavery peacefully. Maybe this period of norther aggression was not about slavery, but had a greater underlying cause.

Re: Why was the civil war fought?
I read an article that stated the true cause was because the south allowed in central bankers from Europe, basically the fed. I also read the war of 1812 with Canada was over the same thing. We had closed a central bank that had only been open for less than a year, and that started the war. Our founding fathers did not want a central bank because it would lead to the predicament we are in right now.

Andrew Jackson killed the 2nd central bank. Our founding fathers were in disagreement, the Federalist wanted strong Fed government and central banking, the Democrats were opposed to both.

Funny how the Federalist the party of big government became the Whigs, then the Republicans.

The Democrats the party of limited government and against central banking was the party taken over, and brought in the Fed during Wilson's term.

Interesting. It was a goal to make us take one. Now we know why.

Tariffs was a huge issue. The south was agrarian and depended on the north to export cotton. The north chose to impose taxes and tariffs that hurt the south much more than the north. Lincoln said he would not fight a war to free slaves. He ended up fighting a war to protect northern industrial interests.

They say Grover Cleveland was the last of the old Democrats. These Presidents that we know nothing about were actually some of our best presidents. They didn't seek glory thru war, and kept government small.

Of course, there were many issues, slavery was one. The biggest problem is that our constitution was voluntary, and states are supposed to have the right to secede.

If the south was allowed to leave, maybe it would have been constant war between, the north and south, with Mexico and Canada joining in. Or possibly the north would have become more competitive in their laws regarding states rights.

Re: Why was the civil war fought?
States rights, I had family that fought on both sides, but slavery is yankee propaganda to keep England out of the war. Yes it was an issue, but it wasn't THE ISSUE.

Emancipation proclamation was pure propaganda for political purposes.

Re: Why was the civil war fought?
Taxes, tariffs and fees paid by the South were used to build the great northern railroads and all the fine infrastructure that benefitted northern industrialists gratly. The yankee government engineered it that way.
When the South began to go around harbor blockades to trade with European merchants, the North decided to crack down.

The yankee troops were mostly draftees while the rebels fought voluntarily and with great determination.
If General Lee had given the order, on July 11, 1864 General Early's Army could have ransacked and pillaged DC, since they were on the edge of town.
Lincoln could hear the cannon fire and see the smoke.

The South was just too decent to win the war.
They didn't want to wreck the capitol.
Too bad.

Re: Why was the civil war fought?
The civil war was fought for the same reason the revolutionary war was fought... the moneychangers and their fractional reserve banking. And they've been at it again since 1913. Now they're about to pull the plug once more. George Washington said "A wagonload of money could scarcely purchase a wagonload of provisions". It's coming around again.
