European leaders warned Thursday that the continent's refugee crisis is growing, and if it's not brought under control by spring, it could push the region past the breaking point.

"We see today that in the first three weeks of the year, there were 35,000 people crossing the (Aegean Sea to Greece) from Turkey," Mark Rutte, Holland's prime minister, said. "Last year, it was only 1,600 in the full month of January. When spring comes, the numbers will quadruple. We can't cope with these numbers any longer."

Millions of migrants from the Middle East have made their way through Turkey en route to northern Europe.

Rutte said the European Union has six to eight weeks to get a grip on the crisis, echoing similar remarks made this week by European Council President Donald Tusk.

"When spring comes, the number of refugees coming out of Turkey and Lebanon and other countries through Greece and the Western Balkans and into the rest of European Union (will rise)," Rutte said.

The fate of Europe could be decided in the next two months.
That's the stark warning from European Union leaders grappling with the world's worst refugee crisis in 70 years and the prospect of Britain deciding to break away.

More than a million migrants and refugees arrived in Europe in 2015, bringing its system of open internal borders to near breaking point.

Arrivals are already running well ahead of levels seen this time last year, and are likely to explode again soon.
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, said 35,000 people had made the sea crossing from Turkey into Greece in the first three weeks of 2016.
"When spring comes, the numbers will quadruple. We cannot cope with the numbers any longer," Rutte said. "We need to get a grip on this issue in the next 6 to 8 weeks."

Under the Schengen agreement dating back 30 years, 400 million residents, plus many non-EU nationals, businessmen and women, and tourists, can travel freely across thousands of miles from the Russian border to the Atlantic coast of France or Portugal.
But the influx of refugees, and last year's terror attacks in Paris, have placed the system of passport-free travel under unprecedented strain. If it collapses, jobs would be lost and growth would suffer. And one of the fundamental principles of European integration -- the free movement of people -- would be lost.

Mounting concern in Europe over the scale of the refugee crisis burst into the open when the Dutch prime minister warned that without a reduction in the flow of migrants, border-free travel under the Schengen agreement could break down within two months.

Speaking in Davos, at the World Economic Forum, Mark Rutte said Europe was close to breaking point and needed to come up with a common response or run the risk that one of the EU’s founding principles would start to unravel. “We need to get a grip on this issue in the next six to eight weeks”, Rutte said.

He said in the first three weeks of this year 35,000 people had crossed the EU’s borders and this would quadruple once the spring arrives. “We can’t cope with the numbers any longer. We need to get a grip on this.”

Rutte said that before the Schengen agreement was killed off, the EU had to try to make the Dublin agreement – under which refugees should seek asylum in the first country they reach – work. “No one wants to kill Schengen, but if it is only a fairweather system then it cannot survive.”

Rutte was backed by Manuel Valls, the French prime minister, who said the refugee crisis and security challenges posed existential threats to Europe. “The European project can die, not in decades or years but very fast, if we are unable to face up to the security challenge.”

Metro Closes Doors with Major Storm Headed to Nation’s Capital

blizzard warning has been issued, states of emergency have been declared in D.C., Maryland and Virginia, and major school districts will be closed Friday ahead of a strong storm system that could bring heavy snowfall to the area.

Authorities throughout the area are advising residents to stay off the roadways after the snow starts falling, and D.C.’s Metro system has even announced that it will shut down all train and bus service Friday night through Sunday.

Wal-Mart is closing 269 stores, more than half of them in the U.S. and another big chunk in its challenging Brazilian market.

The stores being shuttered account for a fraction of the company’s 11,000 stores worldwide and less than 1 percent of its global revenue.

‘No, the three big things that I believe will take place in the 21st century are more profound, and not necessarily bad.’

The first change, Shostak believes, is that we will finally understand biology at a molecular level.
As a result, humanity will be able to cure all diseases, and usher in an era of ‘designer babies’.
He also believe that humanity will expand into nearby space in a drive to gain more resources, such as copper, zinc and platinum.
This, he says, will also help alleviate overpopulation


‘Everyone expects our progeny to establish colonies on the moon or Mars, but the better deal is to build huge, orbiting habitats in which you can live without a spacesuit.
‘Think of scaling up the International Space Station a few thousand times. We can put unlimited numbers of people in such engineered environments.’

But it’s not just designer babies and space colonies that will change humanity as we know it.
Before 2100, Shostak predicts that we will develop generalised artificial intelligence (GAI).
This will allow machines to take over jobs normally done by humans.

Remember that strange solar system that could have been home to an 'alien megastructure'? Well it turns out that the sensible theory that was supposed to disprove the 'alien megastructures' has now itself just been disproven.

The whole fiasco has stemmed from a completely normal star called KIC 8462852. The only problem was that this star wasn't behaving as it should have been, instead it was dimming in light in a way that frankly wasn't supposed to happen.

At first some researchers came up with the out-of-this-world theory that it was as a result of a giant 'alien megastructure' possibly even a 'Dyson's Sphere' that was harnessing the power of the star.

Turkey has the right to a decisive influence on Syrian peace talks due to start next week as the sheer number of refugees has made it the “second largest Syrian country in the world”, the Turkish prime minister has said.

Ahmet Davutoğlu, who is visiting London for talks with David Cameron, said it was unimaginable that the estimated 2.5 million refugees in the country would return if the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad, remained in power beyond a transition period.

“No country has more to say on these peace talks than Turkey because 2.5 million Syrians are in Turkey,” he said. “It is for us now a domestic issue if there is no well-established peace in Syria. If Assad is sitting there in Damascus, no Syrian will go back.”

A new International Monetary Fund study points out the potential boost to the European economy from the wave of refugees entering the Continent. But the same report, looking at the experience of Turkey and Germany in particular, shows just how long and painful that process may be.

Turkey is of particular note because, as Syria’s neighbor, it’s received about half of the Syrian refugee inflows, some 2 million since March 2011, the IMF says, drawing on United Nations statistics. That’s the equivalent of 2.5% of Turkey’s own population.

As refugees keep arriving, Germany is pressing partners such as Greece to do more to secure the bloc’s outer border and to fulfill an EU pledge of 3 billion euros ($3.3 billion) in aid to Turkey, or risk seeing Europe’s passport-free travel in the so-called Schengen area fall apart as governments take matters into their own hands and reinstall border checks.

Merkel is to host a summit with Turkish government leaders later this week, with her popularity falling to its lowest point since October 2011 in a ZDF poll. Amid open revolt within her Christian Democratic Union ranks, party leaders on Monday backed changing asylum rules to make it easier to expel citizens of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia.

While the IMF paper’s authors caution that their figures are tentative because the exact numbers of asylum-seekers coming to Europe cannot be accurately predicted, they say the provision of support services to refugees, such as housing, health and education, will increase aggregate demand in the short term, which with supportive monetary policy, “help compensate for possible downward pressures on wages and inflation associated with the gradual entry of refugees into employment.”

“Quick labor market integration can unlock the potential economic benefits of the refugee inflow,” the authors say in the report. “Granting asylum-seekers early access to the private and public sector labor market and self-employment is a key prerequisite for their speedy integration in the workforce.”

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Thursday urged "concrete steps" from the European Union to help Turkey tackle the refugee crisis, a day before he holds critical talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Speaking at the annual Davos summit of economic and business leaders, Davutoglu said he wouldn't even ask Merkel about the 3 billion euros in financial aid the EU promised last year to grant to Turkey in return for stemming the flow of refugees into the bloc.

"We are not asking (for) money, we are not negotiating (for) money... For us, it's a humanitarian duty, therefore the problem is not financial assistance," Davutoglu said.
"We are asking solidarity, we are asking to have a sense of common destiny," he said.

"We will be discussing these with my dear colleague Merkel and we hope the next steps will be concrete steps to address this issue," he added, speaking in English.

Under increased pressure to reduce the number of refugees arriving in Europe, Merkel will host Davutoglu in Berlin for a joint meeting of key ministers from both governments. '

EU officials have complained Turkey was not doing enough to limit the numbers crossing the Aegean Sea despite the landmark deal in November providing Ankara cash as well political concessions in return for its cooperation in tackling Europe's worst refugee crisis since World War II.
