If you have been raised to love this country and its founding virtues, as we have been, it is hard as hell for us to believe it is all slipping away and calling people stupid names is not likely to get a response.

Hmm.... 'Apathy' is defined as a lack of interest, enthusiasm, or concern.. How is that the opposite of 'love' exactly? Is 'love' defined as the presence of interest, enthusiasm, and concern? What's your definition of 'love'?

How exactly is joining the armed forces serving to improve the conditions of our country domestically and contributing to making our country 'great'? We have been invading and occupying foreign countries, and Amerians citizens by the thousands (tens of thousands?) have been getting killed, seriously injured / maimed, and traumatized. Many are returning home with serious psychological issues as a result of their experiences, they receive poor support and treatment, and this demographic has an alarming high suicide rate (which is having a devastating impact on families)... Spending trillions of dollars on military funding for overseas conflicts which killing and injuring thousands of American citizens in the process, and having a large portion of citizens returning home suffering from PTSD and the risk of suicide - NO, this is not contributing to making the country 'great' again.

When was the last time phone calls from the public caused the politicians to change their ways and start operating with integrity? Do the politicians always answer the phone and do you get to speak with them? Or do you speak with one of his/her 'staff'? These politicians are under no legal obligation to address your concerns, much less change their ways in response to them. It's your phone call versus the influence of millions of dollars spent by lobbyists and special interest groups who ensure that the elected candidates will be sympathetic and supportive of their corporate interests.

If you read some of the personal writings of the individuals who help create the Constitution - they were fully aware of the threat of government corruption and the misuse and abuse of power by a small number of individuals holding positions of authority. They were trying to warn us about how badly things can deteriorate if this is not kept in check. Can you even imagine what their reaction would be to what has become of the nation some 200 years later if they were alive today? Do you think their response to the corrupt system would be along the lines of making sure you cast your vote for the favorite of your two options every 4 years, and make phone calls to your local representatives?

Serving in the military and being sent overseas, making some phone calls to or sending some angry emails your state representatives - it may make a person feel good to do these things, and it may sound nice to hear people say these things - but when you critically examine the effects of such actions/behaviors, it's not having any real impact on the conditions on the ground.

You also referenced 'speaking up for the truth'... What if speaking for the truth entails exposing and shedding light on the corruption, and highlighting the nature of the flawed 'system' that is in place and which is responsible for perpetuating this downward spiral? What if you are operating with the perception that no real changes are going to take place until the majority of the populace sees clearly what is going on and how they are being manipulated? Will a person get accused of being 'apathetic' if he/she has become aware that the 'game' is designed to keep things going in exactly the direction that they have been and to maintain the status quo? Or is 'standing up for the truth' these days considered making sure you voice your support for the 'correct' political candidate who the masses believe is going to play the role of savior and magically fix the country? (even though this has never been witnessed in their lifetimes)...

But please don't mistake my criticism above for cynicism and a call for inaction. I am all for actions that actually make a difference. It is very important to find ways to help, support, and uplift others in your life and whom you come across along the way. Kindness, generosity, and good will can be contagious and if people are fairing better mentally/emotionally - they are in a stronger position to take control of their lives, make sound decisions, and engage in actions that will have a positive effect on the lives of those around them. This is valuable and meaningful. If you care about the people around you and the local conditions on the ground around you and which you can do your part to influence - that to me is what qualifies as being 'patriotic'... But this notion of voicing complaints to lower-level transient representatives, casting a vote every 4 years for what we can all agree are inadequate and less than desirable 'candidates' which we are given to choose from, and even serving in the military - these doesn't translate to me as substantial actions that are actually contributing to the stated goal of improving the state of affairs here on the ground (domestically)...

CNN interviewed a bunch of Iowans in a diner and showed them photos of all the candidates and asked them who they are.

Most of them had no clue and got them mixed up with other candidates.

I think that only natural born citizen property owners should have the privilege of voting in the USA for state and federal elections. That way, only people that have some skin in the game are allowed to have the illusion of making decisions. Granted, a lot of other reforms would be needed to insure that it is easier to obtain and retain property.

I played politics, for 40 years (ten elections) as an Independent ... that way, I didn't have to vote, for "the lesser of two evils" - and that is where I found the Constitutionalist were planting grass, and hoping it would root - in the otherwise barren political arena - but it never did - progressive political correct-izd kills grass roots.

in the 40 years that I played Politics - not one president kept his oath of office ... so I quit playing - so I could spend more time - tending grassroots that feed those who DO keep their oaths and aren't interested in playing games they always loose.
