Outside Cat
Okay. We have three cats. Four, if you count Outside Cat. They are all black and white. (Tuxedo Cats)

We tried to take Outside Cat (we didn't name him for a reason) to the vet to get fixed. He ended up hyperventilating and I thought he was gonna tear me to shreds in the truck. (We'd tricked him into the cat carrier, but he pulled the door off!) He flipped out in the truck.

Now, what? This cat is a sweetie. He won't let anyone but me and my husband anywhere near him. He needs to be fixed. We've been giving him diatomaceous earth. ( just for worms) We're trying for him.

He's a sweetie.

Catch him in a live trap. Throw him in the trunk and cover with a blanket. Take to vet. Sedate. Turn into a good kitty. End of problem.

Don't over think it to much.

Alternative........... a .22 Short. There are too many cats anyways.

Try Bach's Rescue Remedy to calm him down. Not a narcotic--all natural made from flowers. For humans and animals--will help Outside Cat be calmer.

Also, thesecat carriers are pricey but they are amazing!

[link to sleepypod.com]

I can't tell you how to calm the cat stays in the carrier. The top opens making it super easy to get cat in. Is fleece-lined and the round design makes the cat feel secure not caged which greatly reduces stress.

If all else fails, ask the vet to give you a tranquilizer for him beforehand.

Get a stronger cage.
you need to get him to the vet and let them do the surgery. He'll freak out, but you are the adult and you know what's best for him.

Same advice I'd give if this was about a child afraid to go to the doctor.

Really have to agree if you are going to continue to
have "Outside cat" (doesn't he have a name?) continue
to live outdoors, you do him a real disservice by
having him fixed. The fixed cats do much more poorly
outside than non-fixed cats, just because they need
all those hormones, etc. to be clever with other
predators they will encounter. My vote is just to
let him stay in one piece and just work around the
inconvenience you may encounter when he comes inside.

But that's just me...besides if you force him to stay
inside, when he is already acclimated to being an outside
cat, you may face what this pet owner faced (see pic.)

Re: Outside Cat
Last year, or the year before, I don't freaking remember. We were standing outside when my husband got home from work. "meow, meow, meow!!!!!!"

We heard this. "Meow, meow, meow!"

It was pitch dark and fixing to storm. "Meow, meow, meow!"

Go find the baby, I told my husband.

He couldn't find him, even with his headlamp on.

I walked out and listened......... meow meow meow meow!

My husband, to this day, swears that Outside Cat pointed up in the tree.

We found a 5-week-old kitten staring down at us from a bird nest.

My husband climbed up in the tree and got him out. We brought him inside and fed him.

His name is Nestor. He's a brat.

Except for the slap part....if you can get him in a pillowcase - he should stay pretty calm. It's dark, warm and swaddles them. Just tie a double knot in the top.

Or a plain old box. For about $5 you can get a cardboard cat carrier at a pet store. Those lock quickly and easily and they can't get out. Just be sure to hold the bottom when you lift it.

I completely agree with everyone. Outside Cat needs to be fixed.

The only reason we call him Outside Cat is because there was another one that we named. He got hit.

I don't wan't Outside Cat to get hit.

We are thinking about our options. Outside Cat is very cool. My husband tries to take him for "rides" to get him used to going in the car.

My question is, when he gets to the vet, then what? Holy moly, this cat has serious claws. How will the vet even fix him? I have no idea?

Outside Cat will be darted, lol, I don't know what else to think?

Re: Outside Cat
OP, have caught many outside cats & put in carriers to take to vet for neutering. Used to be an A.C.O. and now do it for friends who have hard time getting their "outside" cats into carriers.

Stand the cat carrier on end so door end is facing up. It will make it a lot easier to "drop" cat into it. Leave door open. Pick up cat by back of neck. It momentarily "paralyses" him. When you lift him up by back of neck place other hand under him to support him so he's not hanging by the neck. Carry him like this to carrier and drop him in tail end first. Close door and place cat carrier in normal position. Then take him to vets.

I'm hope you want him to become an indoor cat at least at night. Lots of night predators out at night such as coyotes, raccoons, fox (even in the suburbs & cities). I'd keep him in house 24/7 for a few weeks so he acclimates to indoors and then you can let him out during day if you want but I'd bring him in at night.

If he lets you pet him - just get him relaxed and then on of you scoop him up and put him the box before he can react. But if either of you hesitate at all - it won't work. If tag teaming doesn't work - then just one of you. I do a lot better handling the cats by myself than with a slightly nervous helper.

Re: Outside Cat
We have a male and female outdoor cat that are both fixed. We adopted them from a neighbor who had both of them fixed but continued to keep them outdoors. They will not come in doors and are very good at defending their territory. She had had another outdoor cat fixed and he was still a fighter but she took him with her when she moved. Now it is much calmer around here without the constant fights. I don't see where having them fixed made them more docile. They were pretty much the same except without the ability to make more cats.

My misunderstanding - thought you were having a hard time getting him to vets.

But why does neutering him piss you off? You should take a trip to one of the "kill shelters" (usually run by a municipality and not animal save groups). In the spring & summer the people bring in unwanted litters from their cats and they go straight to the euthanasia room because the shelter has no room for them. And the same for puppies. They also euthanize immediately animals "turned in" by owners because they don't have to hold them the 72 hrs. like they do strays. It's a very sad situation all because people don't want to neuter their outdoor pets.

I have no objections to an indoor, fenced in dog or otherwise contained animal not being neutered. But pets roaming loose really should be neutered.

If you can get a better, sturdier carrier, I bet that the vet can handle everything else. They deal with angry/scared/hurt animals all the time.

And... thank you so much for caring for this lovely little kitty cat!
