Pissed and need some advice from fellow parents!
We need some advice from fellow parents.

So my daughter comes home from school yesterday and hands her Mother and I an unsealed envelope which is from the department of health in our county with a paper inside with the title "school health height and weight referral form". It lists our daughter's name, the date, name of her elementary school, her teacher and her grade.
Below that is a box that says "please return completed form by mail or fax within two weeks to the department of health in your county" then lists their address. On the line below that led by several asterisks it says "do not send this form to school with your child".
Our daughter is nine years old, is 4 foot 7 and weighs 105 pounds which is a little thick but far from being obese. She has been in the 95th percentile since birth. When we called to ask questions they say they've never weighed the children and never measured their height, which concurs with what our daughter told us. What I want to know is how the hell did they pick our child then and what business is it of theirs the weight and height of our child. My wife and I are very attentive parents take her to the doctor regularly and try to lead a fairly healthy lifestyle.
Has anyone else heard of letters like this? We're looking for suggestions on how to handle this. We are both professionals but this has us seeing red. We didn't cut out PE classes, the schools have, we don't put together the school lunch menus they do.(it's crap by the way). Of course with the envelope not being sealed our daughter had looked at the paper so a lot of good it does for them to tell us not to send the form back to the school with our child. Their intention certainly wasn't to keep it from our child seen the information on the form.
The form also list spaces on it for a medical provider to check the child's weight, height, BMI, BMI percentage, recommendations and we're supposed to have them sign it and return it.
The one funny thing and all of this is that it list the representatives name with the department of health, I looked her up on a social media website and she's a pi The one funny thing and all of this is that it list the representatives name with the department of health, I looked her up on a social media website and she's no small woman by far.

Re: Pissed and need some advice from fellow parents!
I've heard of, seen and filled out those forms before when my daughter went to grade and high school. All the kids had them. In Illinois, I believe it's required. Can't remember-she's in the Navy now, have other things to worry about.

Call the school, or better, go in and speak to the administrator. Ask them if this form is mandatory, and if all students need to complete it. If not, ask why your child is singled out. Nothing to get upset over-yet. You need to find out more info. Don't worry a bit about your childs weight, unless you feed her a crap diet of candy, fast foods and soda. Yeah, we went through that in 2nd grade, then left that behind for good, and enrolled her in a top karate program in the area. In one year her weight and energy was great, and she kept it going through HS graduation. School menus are crap. Can't brown bag it? I hear Star Wars lunch boxes are making a comeback for some reason.

It's a Heath Dept/State law most likely that is forcing us to have our Doc's fill the forms out-at least that's how we had to do it. And if she goes out for sports, there are more forms-like the one saying you give your permission as a parent to allow your child to have their urine randomly tested. I signed it, but had a lawyer rewrite the form with our added addition-that we would be made aware 24 hours prior before our MINOR child was tested, in writing. Parents actually have many rights, they just need to learn what they are, then exercise them.

Re: Pissed and need some advice from fellow parents!
That is an absurd invasion of privacy. I would call the health department and demand to speak with the person in charge, or go there in person. I would tell him in no uncertain terms that there is no way in hell they will be invading my child's privacy and overstepping the bounds that they are afforded. I would also make a recording of said conversation.

Then, I would call the school, talk to the principal and tell her that profiling my child for her BMI is borderline bullying that I don't believe that school officials are exempt from lawsuit. I would ask her exactly what her understanding is of the program and why, exactly, the letters were sent. I think school officials are often just sheep that do as they are told, so, maybe helping them to question things would help. I would also tell them in a formal letter (to the school and the district) that you do not want any correspondence from the health department sent with your daughter. period.

Then, talk to your daughter. I don't know what her level of comprehension is, but, I have a 10 year old and she is very familiar with the school's role, the parent's role, and, society's role. It is your job to parent your children- not the school's and not society's. If your daughter is healthy, that is your responsibility and something you can be proud of. The school is there to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic and that is all.

Good luck. Keep your composure. Document everything.

Man, this is really whack. Sorry you all are going through this. If it was me, I would call the office and ask about it. You know, the nurses office usually has some easy to talk to people working in there and they should be up on what is going on. My mil is a teacher in CA- are you in CA by any chance? I didn't catch which state this is in. When my son was in high school, I discovered they like to put out all sort so things and there is no legal recourse on most- you do't have to comply. Call them and ask around - get the scoop on it. peace

Ever thought about enrolling your child in a private Catholic school? And your wife should teach there too. Better overall experience. Lots of seeds of God planted. No one would dare hurt your child's feelings by singling them out. Or there's a damn quick stop to it. Think about it. Pray about it. There's financial assistance available big time.

And by the way: private grade school leads to scholarships to private high school which leads to scholarships to another great private college, need I say more?!? One heck of an investment anyway you look at it. Especially from the viewpoint of eternity. Well done, faithful servant. Well done.

Thank you for the reminder to keep my composure . I'll keep that in the back of my head when I go to their county health offices to ask questions and hopefully recorde to ask questions and hopefully recorded it. If I can get away with recording it hopefully I can find a way to post it here to share with everyone.
We've had my daughter playing softball for two years and she was in Karate for a year as well so she's not a slouch sitting around eating Bon-Bons lol.
For those who are curious My family has always had a history of carrying a little bit of weight as children and growing up to be very muscular and strong. I'm 6'2 230lbs and about 23-24% body fat for what it's worth. I played baseball for 20yrs and used to be a certified personal trainer for a 2nd job (until I broke my back) aside from my regular career as a software engineer . My wife is 5'9, slender, ran track in H.S. and college with a metabolism everyone wished they had where she can eat anything. I only mention these things to give you some insight about us and that we aren't mooches sitting around waiting for our monthly check. We love our daughter dearly (she's an only child with a heart of gold and a sense of humor most adults can't match). Breaks my heart to know she read the form. We've always focused on raising a confident well rounded child and weight comes and goes on a lot of people when they are young. Shame what our country is turning into. Just another way for them to tighten the screws of tyranny.

Funny you should say that, seeing as though we are Catholic. Unfortunately the Catholic school we sent her to in pre-k and kindergarten were sub-par as far as curriculum, and the only other one was way over our price range. We may need to consider that again so THANK YOU kindly for sharing your thoughts on that idea.

When you go to the school, be sure and print out a giant size pic of the health dept lady who is large and in charge Marge. Put pic on a stand, then ask them questions....

When you go to health dept, do the same thing. How is our tax dollars paying you to tell us our kids that they might be obese, Marge? What's your BMI & %, Marge? I'm calling her Marge. Use a pointer too.

I actually did this on a different subject. It was an impromptu of a science board project. She brought it in, propped it up on a stand amd proceeded to attempt to belittle me. I audio recorded it all. She brought the evidence that I used to take her down. While in the room with principal and teacher, I got on a role and asked the principal for his ruler to point with. My last child is graduating this yr and the file they must have on me with need a shreddING company.

I'd have to agree with those suggesting contact a lawyer ... ASAP.

You need to insure whatever you do will not affect your wife's career.

If you start "making waves" your wife may be "pressured".

But WTF do I know?

I'm in CA. Both my kids were born in the 98% percentile! Son is now 10 years old, wears a mens M, mens size 10 shoe and is 5'1, weighs 140 lbs. The kid is SOLID as a rock and growing taller by the second. His pediatrician isn't worried about his weight or size because he is getting taller.

I've never received a letter like that and if I did I wouldn't respond to it. LOL, i'm one of "those" parents who doesn't vaccinate or provide information like that. The department of health has NO right to information like that. They probably are doing a survey to see what body weight is now for school aged children. I would say IMHO you are not required to provide any information to them. Sometimes the county will do random population sampling for studies but it is voluntary and a lot of people don't know they do NOT have to participate. Your daughters weight is personal information. I would NOT share it if it were me but then again I almost always go against the grain.

Now speaking as a mom and RN, your daughters height and weight shouldn't be a concern if she is healthy. She is a growing girl and her weight will fluctuate. 105lbs at 4'7 is not too bad. She is still growing and she will lose it. Last year my son's pedi worried about Diabetes as he hadn't grown more than an inch that year and his weight was 136. This year at his annual physical they weighed him and measured him 4 times using 2 different measuring devices and measured me and the doctor to ensure they were right because he grew 4.5" in one year. The doctor was blown away and said given his growth this year, his shoe size and his weight gain of only 6 pounds that he is just going to be tall and built solid. Personally I wouldn't sweat it and don't make it a big deal in front of your daughter. The age your daughter and my son are fragile for self esteem. If your daughter feels there is a problem with her weight it could potentiate an eating disorder. My son every once in awhile gets upset about his weight because his doctor put emphasis on it last year and I have to remind him, my dad and all my aunts/uncles on his side are over 6'4 and my son's father was 6'1. He's gonna be a tall man and we still have 8 more years of growing ahead of us.

Personally i'd trash the note and forget about it.

Good luck OP

Yes, I did cure my Stage 4 cancer in two weeks when I was 48. I also reversed my chronic kidney disease (glomerulonephritis) when I was 25. In neither case were any medical treatments involved.

I taught math at a high school a couple of years ago. It was my 8th year at that school and I was dealing with some extremely challanging personal issues (spouse addiction issues... had to tell him he needed to go to rehab or get out of the house... for the sake of me and our 2 year-old daughter).

Well, during this period of time, I lost quite a bit of weight due to stress. I ended up getting called into the counselor's office for a meeting, under the impression it was related to one of my students. When I arrived in the counselor's office, she told me that she really just wanted to talk to me about my weight loss and then she brought in her side kick... the school nurse. They proceeded to harass me (not in a concerned manner) and accused me of anorexia and bulimia... the list went on and on. I was stunned/sickened by their audacity and felt intuitively unsafe from that point on. I resigned at the end of that year and would never go back. There is something extremely unnerving about education employees considering themselves as Gods and hurling judgements around. Many things they should stay away from.

OP find a hidden camera in the shape of a shirt button that you can get for cheap. It'll be worth it. You need to document this on VIDEO, not just pictures and paper. This is the 21st century, paper and pictures can be faked and forged, but video will be harder given the time frame. Them you move up to the congressmen, senators, and governor of your state, hell, why not email the clip to every media organization in your state? GO VIRAL!

Thank you very much! We are in Florida. Never in my wife's 17years of teaching has she seen them do this. I'm sure it comes down from Manchelle.
We unfortunately didn't wake up to the dangers of vaccines until 6years ago. She won't be getting anymore. On her birthday her Pedatrician's Nurse offered us the chance to give her the HPV vaccine at 9. When I said No Way the nurse acted dumbfounded. Said she just got it for both of her young daughters. I referred her to a couple websites and of course she looked at me like I had 3 heads. Ubfortunately her ignorance may effect her daughter's health.

Thank you again VERY much! I bet they report families to CPS if you don't reply, which is why Ibelieve I'll contact an attorney tomorrow.

You cannot be compelled to sign a anything. I can't tell you how many pieces of paper I was told to sign that I tossed when my kids were in school. Well, tossed or "modified" with my initials, signed, sent back and never heard from again. That means they accepted my "counter offer"

You don't need a lawyer, you need a stiff spine and and the word NO in your vocabulary. These junior tyrant tends to back down when they meet any kind of resistance.

Great ideas! Thank you! I may make my own modifications by putting N/A (not applicable) next to each category and signing it.

So sorry you had to go through that. Had I been your husband I would have been in their office the next day with some choice words. I pray you and your child are ok now.

Re: Pissed and need some advice from fellow parents!

We would love to hear any serious thoughts thank you very much

You could make a case on that.
Sorry you're going through it, sounds like Obamacare BS! They're trying to preemptively keep people out of hospitals to keep costs down?

FUCK THAT!!!!

Throw that shit away, as another poster recommended.

I went through similar things as my kids were growing up (Now 16 & 18), but not THAT ridiculous....

For FUCKS SAKE, (FFS), 9 years old and weighs 105 lbs? That is NOTHING!!!! By the time she hits high school, She'll be Knobby Kneed, 5'07" and probably STILL weight 105.

For many centuries we have survived and endured. NOBODY judged our children.

It's only since the late 80's or early 90's that this has been in place.
One of these days... A *REAL* rain is gonna come and wash all this scum off the streets.
