No no, this is all backwards. Do a reverse mortgage and leave nothing to your progeny. It's the only way you'll be able to spend your last years at the nickel slots!

I must say, I've never heard this one, but it's true.

I've just planted an olive grove so all glp-ers in 2215 can sit under them.

Awesome.

The problem occurs after the old men are dead and the society cuts down the trees.

True story...

Romans planted olive trees along every road they built across North Africa all for the use of whoever would maintain the roads.

The Muslims used them for firewood...
 Quoting: Masiro

Wow, that short sentence really says it all.

I planted a bunch of Rowan trees last year, I'll probably never see them fully grown, but I don't care so long as they continue to grow and don't get destroyed by future savages.

Plenty of useless old hippies love trees.

It sure doesn't make society better.

It's a proverb.

It is giving without expecting return.

Oh, never mind, this generation certainly doesn't get it.

This is post 9/11 mind set. Those of us who lived in the 20th century had a distant hope humanity could get its shit together. Now we just fight and die on this little blue dot
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18097125

Some of us who lived in the 20th century knew it was going to come to this, because of all of the ideological feel-good kum-bah-yah idiots who would rather see the world as the TV and movies tell them it ought to be, instead of how it really is.
 Quoting: Flying Elvii

You're the ones who made it come to this cos you lack the wit, vision and determination to build a better way.

In the 20th century tv and movies didn't tell us jack shit of the stuff you claim it did. We did what we did cos nothing that cain from the mainstream was any good.

No-

A society becomes great when old patriots water the tree with the blood of tyrants to obtain liberty they won't live to enjoy.

Pics or it didn't happen.

The Romans planted 6000 crucifixes along the Appian way and nailed people to them. For the horrendous crime of not wanting to die in combat for other peoples amusement.

The tree offers shade even to the woodcutter.

The problem is not with the trees.

It's crazy that so many people are talking about trees, Romans and Muslims without focusing on the meaning of the proverb.

Wrong. The crucifixions were way before then, about 100BC, along the via Appia, long before the actual Appian Way was built, a great construction.

Yeah good point.

FWIW I used to plant trees for a living. 2 - 3000 a day before it destroyed my back.

Was hoping they'd suck up carbon for generations but many have been chopped down for woodchips. Cos we need our bog roll now.

No one in our society thinks about what they'll build for the future not themselves.

That's the motto of the Jews. They've set up control 100 years ahead for their ethnicity.

My boyfriend always says "You're going to die soon, you old Jew fart! So why do you care?!" Everytime we notice them setting up something. But that's why. That phrase is the how to create results.

Huh. I hadn't heard of this story, but if it's true it's very telling, isn't it?

Western culture builds up for the future use of others, Islamic culture destroys for their own immediate, one-time-only use.
 Quoting: KonspiracyKitty

There were no Muslims back then. Only Christians and Jews.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71364047

Perhaps you are not aware that olive trees live for hundreds of years---they are even some that exist today that are close to 1000 years old. the Romans were last in N Africa in 4-5C. The pedophile, warlord Mohammed comes 200 years later copying everybody else's shit and adding his own perversity to make up his own death cult(it's NOT a religion, that's for sure).

The chances of the Muslims trashing the trees are very high. Muslims piss all over everything. They see any kindness---still today---as weakness.

Luv ya Tess, but the Appian Way--just down the street from me--- was built 312BC and Crassus put the crucifixes up every 100m at the time of the revolt of Spartacus (73BC). Via Appia already an old road by then.
