IMPORTANT? SIGNIFICANT? - DOD Communications Exercise on Feb. 12th
Below is a copy of an email that I received from a Ham radio friend of mine. Considering everything that is going on in our country I find the nature of this exercise and its timing to be rather curious. You may want to pull up one of the online shortwave radios and have a listen during this exercise on the frequencies given in the email below.

Please keep in mind that in a SHTF situation the chances that phone and internet communications will be down is EXTREMELY high - the only thing left will be amateur radio (or two tin cans with a string between them).

The Department of Defense has scheduled a Communications Exercise (COMEX) for Friday February 12, 2016. The exercise will take place between the hours of 05:00 am to 05:00 pm Mountain Standard Time. The exercise will test the availability of communications without the use of telephones or the internet.

All U.S. Amateur Radio Operators are encouraged to participate. You do NOT need to be a member of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, American Radio Relay League, or any other amateur radio organization. ANY and ALL amateur operators are requested to participate !!

Army and Air Force MARS, using regular ham radio call signs, will be forwarding DoD requests for information about your local operating conditions and public infrastructure in your county. Report local conditions as they exist when you respond - no fabricated information,
please!

New Mexico hams can contact Army and Air Force MARS stations via - 2 meters MegaLink - 40 meters 7.2365 MHz - and 80 meters 3.939 MHz.

This thought has certainly entered my mind - I hope we're both wrong on this!

I guess it all depends on whether the DOD will end up being "the good guys" or "the bad guys".

Regardless, if/when the SHTF ham radio/shortwave radio will be the only means of communicating and/or getting accurate information from across the country.

Agreed - the same type of thought entered my mind when I heard Hannity talking about this concealed carry deal analogous to "life lock" for identity theft. It's a group that you can join that has a "team of lawyers you can call if you have to exercise your second amendment right and protect yourself"

My thought was - what a perfect way to assemble a list of people willing to defend themselves in a martial law situation! This is information the government needs to know - make sure they have the appropriate subsidies

Same idea and I'm with you - hope I'm wrong in my skepticism

FWIW I will definitely be checking out those frequencies on the 12th as I am really curious to find out what kind of "...information about your local operating conditions and public infrastructure in your county..." will be dealt with. What does the DOD really mean by "operating conditions" and "infrastructure"?

DOD does interoperability exercises all the time with amateur radio. Doesn't mean somethings not up but it isn't something they just started to do.

Amateur radio just had their Winter Field Day too, a fairly recent invention.

Being a licensed amateur radio operator means that your name and home address (I'm sorry, 'permanent station location') is listed in a public database that anyone can look up.

Same day when the Pope and the Orthodox Patriarch meet in Cuba.

It is a historic meeting.

They attempted this meeting 20 years ago, but it failed. Of course, if you know what I am claiming, you will understand why that failed 20 years ago.

Remember the "20 years" of my living among the masses?

Now, this is going to be very interesting.

Seems like a harmless excercise.

If "they" ever wanted to, they could jam every HAM radio in the country in about one minute. It's way cheaper than sending a drone or Apache and spending one Hellfire missile per HAM shack.
If "they" ever wanted to map all the HAMs, I'm sure they've done this a hundred times over with drones and satellites without anyone being the wiser.

it's the unregistered outgoing signals they are looking for!!!! Those registered and listeners are not of their concern.

Much easier to expose these signals now, than after something happens and everyone goes dark!

"They" could locate the EMF given off by spark plugs in running engines under tree canopies 40+ years ago, close enough to take it out a jet and a dumb gravity dropped 250 or 500 pounder.

Im sure today anything under 27 MHz would be childs play.

sounds like they preparing for the power grid to get taken offline.

seriously it makes sense, they just preparing in case this could happen. was told that our U.S. power grid infrastructure is weak and vulnerable. systems of this nature need to be upgraded because it is these obsolete systems that give would be hackers the keys to the kingdom.

The gentleman that originally sent the email notification of this exercise to my friend provided the following response to the question "Are you aware of the FCC ever doing an exercise like this in the past?":

His response:

"To my knowledge and my back ground with MARS for past 35 years or so I have never seen an exercise like this. Usually only the armed forces day which uses HF cross banding is the only operation between military (MARS) and regular amateurs."

As I have stated before, this, to me, is a real curiosity!

BTW - MARS stands for Military Auxilliary Radio System
