Face Palmer User ID: 71449348 Germany 02/11/2016 10:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Linux is very user friendly, its just very selective on who it befriends. "The world will soon wake up to the reality that everyone is broke and can collect nothing from the bankrupt, who are owed unlimited amounts by the insolvent, who are attempting to make late payments on a bank holiday in the wrong country, with an unacceptable currency, against defaulted collateral, of which nobody is sure who holds title." Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. The woman who is not pursued sets up the doctrine that pursuit is offensive to her sex, and wants to make it a felony. No genuinely attractive woman has any such desire. - H.L. Mencken, In Defense Of Women |

The only problem is hardware vendors don't give a shit to release Linux versions of their drivers, so 95% of all the drivers for Linux must be compiled by the community for free. It's a tremendous task and nearly impossible given how many vendors there are in the world and how much hardware there is on the market. Apple boasts everything "just works" but they only have their own 5 computers at any moment to take care of. Windows drivers are supplied by the hardware manufacturers. Linux takes on a task of providing drivers and working on every platform, every graphic card, every sound card, every chip, every display, etc EVER PRODUCED IN THE WHOLE WORLD. Compare and tell me Linux is shit. |

Quoting: LinuXuniL 53817083 Nice. Remember,..."Its ALL Linux underneath." haha. My dad worked for at&t back in the day, and I grew up around PC's. When I broke something, I had to fix it. This thought me a lot. I remember when we had our first unix box, wow. But for non-server types, we stuck with MS. That is until XP was nixed. From that time on, I've been a linux fanatic. There are very few reasons for me to even touch any other OS. |

My linux driver works, and it works without problems. That's all I need. That's why someone would keep the dual boot option open. |

Though you can play Dying Light and Witcher 3 on Linux. There is always the option of Wine and PlayOnLinux. They aren't overall solutions but can work. For windows users, Wine allows Windows applications to run on the Linux platform. To date there are thousands of fully supported applications that now run on Wine (check out the application database for a full list) and that list is ever growing. Granted most of the Wine work is focused on games, but you’ll still find a healthy list of productivity apps available. after you install wine, you will be able to install and run Windows applications. As I mentioned, not every application will work. Most will, but if you’re looking to get your in-house, proprietary solution up and running, you might hit a few snags. Once you're used to it, most issues can be worked out. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69739093 What are the negatives? I'm seriously considering this after the damn GWX bullshit keeps hijacking my system!!!!!!!! There are four distributions that can run on x86 and two, count 'em, two for ARM hardware. So, Hell yes! As far as utilizing a quad core...Many applications aren't explicitly multi-threaded, so their CPU-bound tasks will indeed be limited to one core at a time. Modern web browsers, however, use (at least) one core per window, so if you have multiple windows open you'll benefit from multiple cores. More importantly, running Linux systems consists of many processes running, all taking turns using the CPU. Having multiple cores available means that, when two tasks want CPU time at the same time (which will happen a lot) the kernel doesn't have to choose. I find this makes a real difference in the responsiveness of the system. Try a dual boot, if you love it, delete windows. |

As I mentioned, debian has a ton of packages. You could just benchmark them yourself. [link to askubuntu.com] I'd love to see the results. At the same time, mint has come out with a minibox, running AMD A4 6400T processor with Radeon R3 graphics. Radeon and AMD has an extensive list of drivers specifically for different linux distros. [link to www.linux.com (secure)] [link to www.techworm.net] Obviously I'd stay away from Google OS and Chrome OS (even though it's just a internet OS). ----------------- That mentioned, here is a conspiracy: Ian Murdock -best known for launching the open-source distro (debian) in 1993- supposedly committed suicide not too long ago. It's crazy to read through some of the twitter feeds of the followers...many are anon. What the MSM mention was that he was arrested for being loud and drunk, and charged with assaulting an officer. But that's not even the main point. As some of these hacker guys dug into the situ, it appears that the feds wanted, and were going to force him to put a backdoor into his system. In turn, he offed himself. Hopefully, linux community will shut this down. I tried to find the tweets, but couldn't find them. Anyhow, here's the background story: [link to www.securitynewspaper.com] But the feds are already forcing their way in: [link to news.filehippo.com] |
