As someone who has been a Food Runner(you assholes forget that THIS is who delivers your food 75% of the time) Server, a Host, a Bartender AND an Owner/Manager, I can tell that almost none of the participants on this thread know what they're talking about.

Servers are paid ~$2+Tips for a reason. They are EXPECTED to do their job and work for those tips. Part of their job is being sociable and an enjoyable person, while taking orders and delivering. The OP being upset about his server not making eye contact is ENTIRELY understandable. Eye contact is EXPECTED in a face-to-face conversation with someone, no matter how short. She WAS rude by not making eye contact, and not doing her best to be sociable and enjoyable. She deserved nothing because she gave nothing. Case closed, don't give two fucks about others "opinions," as my firsthand experience trunps your fanciful ideas on how we should treat underachievers.

I didn't realize tipping was done much in the UK.

Technically a tip should be a reward for good service, but in general we'll leave about 10% of the total bill. Everyone I know tips in restaurants, unless something goes horrendously wrong.

(It used to be said that an Englishman pays the bill with a cheque, and Americans pay the check with a bill).

Not the same in Britain. People are paid at least the national minimum wage. (Although this is abused by some unscrupulous employers). So a tip really is a reward for service over and above the expected, however despite the impression given by the OP MOST Brits will tip if nothing untoward has happened.
