The American "pensioners" paid into Social Security for decades. It is not an entitlement -- people paid for this. They can thank Clinton for removing Social Security finds from the "lock box". He got his balanced budget & budget surplus on the back of Social Security.

social security is YOUR money that has been taken from your paycheck your entire life in the form of social security taxes. this not some free handout people think are owed to them.

i'm sure most my age (40 or below) will gladly opt out of paying social security taxes if they would give us the chance. the system is highly unlikely to be there once we retire, so all that money we paid in will just be taken from us.

Americans pay for their social security out of every paycheck during their entire working life. Social security is not an entitlement program; it's senior people's own money that they receive when they reach retirement age.

If the UK had such a program, their seniors would have money to retire on.

Um ... it was President Lyndon Johnson who removed Social Security from the Trust Fund and moved it to the General Fund so it could be spent. If it had stayed in the Trust Fund, there would be trillions of dollars in it for all of working society to retire on. It would have never run out, thanks to the interest paid on it had it remained in the Trust Fund.

Clinton may have "borrowed" some of it to balance the budget but it never gets paid back except with an IOU.

Social Security was in its own Trust Fund, with interest paid on the balances, until Lyndon Johnson removed it from the Trust Fund in the 1960s and put it in the General Fund so it can be spent. They put in an IOU but what they spend is never paid back. If it had never been removed from the Trust Fund, Social Security would have run out because of the interest paid on the balance. It would be in the trillions of dollars today.
