I can't see a reason why a gun under the pillow would be necessary; having it next to you on your night stand would be just as easily handy. Unless he's scared of some high class thief that's so stealthy he'll be able to get to his gun before him. In which case; your uncle must have a pretty shady past if he's afraid of that scenario. A good dog + a handy gun should be more than enough security for MOST scenarios. Please tell me that he doesn't keep it cocked and ready while he's sleeping.
