I have a 16 year old who really deserves to go to a decent college, first in her class, hard worker etc. I told her she can't take more than 20000 in loans and she is willing to work to pay towards college. I am from the UK and have no idea how this s shit works so advice would be greatly appreciated.

Well good. That's the correct way to feel. Now make it happen. It will work if you stay determined and you'll appreciate finally managing your own life once you get established.

When I was 21 years old my older brother basically did the same to me. Just out of the blue one day he got in my face cussing and told me to get the ---- out. I did and now 25 years later I own my home and have a little nest egg set aside. His job is not too guaranteed and he is always making hints of staying with me just for a short time if ever needed. Yea right.

You can do it and never give up OP.

After I got my degree, I got my loan payments deferred for 4 years while I did my post doc work. I was making virtually nothing on my post doc. Well, not "nothing"...but it was basically a glorified internship. So, I've really only been paying it off the last couple years, and the total amount was more like 11k, with interest.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 38696865

Well you certainly deserve credit for earning your Ph.D. May I ask what discipline is it in?
 Quoting: ShrekM8

Psychology! LOL

Which is probably why I like to hang out with all the weirdos here :P

But I recently left my job to become a stay-at-home mom. Best decision I've ever made :)

After my experiences within academia...I have developed a lot of distrust for academia, and the public school system, in general. So, staying home to homeschool I think is now the best decision for our family.

I'm a teacher and have had a few students who were previously homeschooled.

They are usually very odd, socially awkward with rigid thinking.

Please don't do that to your poor kid.

(I have to agree with this. It leads to no good.)
Psychologists can be amazing people who can inspire others to do great things. Businesses are always looking for mind coaches. I'm sure there is online niche somewhere that you can exploit to help pay off the remaining college loans.

I don't blame you OP for not wanting to flip burgers but maybe take a job below your standards in a company with an opportunity to move up. Prove yourself and they'll promote you.

Hello everyone so just a background I am mid-late 20s and have a 4 year degree from one of the best Universities in the country. I had a nice but ultimately dead end job working on a cruise ship. The experience was great but the wages were way below poverty level and the living conditions piss poor so I resigned thinking that I could easily get a job on land that would pay much better.

Well no thanks to Obama, here I am 3 months later unemployed and I refuse to take a minimum wage burger-flipping, coffee-serving job because why did I go to college if that's what I'm going to end up with.

Anyways long story short my parents have had enough of me already after 3 months and gave me 6 months notice basically. I don't really blame them but at the same time it's not like I've been sitting on my ass for years on end mooching off them. I do stuff around the house and help out where I can. I have enough saved that I could move out but I don't have a car and have been getting to all my job interviews via public transportation. All of these interviews are for part time jobs however so I'm stuck either way.

To top this all off I live in the one of the most expensive places in the world (Bay Area) so rent is sky high and buying a house is pretty much out of the question. The blessing is also a curse.

My dad keeps pestering me to buy a house and claims that he bought a fixer upper house in the 80s for $25,000 which is about $70,000 in today's dollars. This was before the house prices went up exponentially in this area but he does not understand why I can't buy one already. He's lived in this same house for 30+ years and I can't understand why he doesn't sell it and go live in a nicer place.

All of this has me fed up and I've started looking for places that I can afford and just get a minimum wage job until something else comes along. I really don't want to do this but it seems like I have no other options.

military (become an officer, they make more money too, better retirement).

intentional communities (the experience gives references. You could even write a book. If you blog your experiences, gain a huge following, you'll eventually be able to get a decent book deal).

cocktail waitress if you're female. I didn't catch if you were male/female.

landscaping if you are willing to put in a lot of effort.

move to a city with lower priced houses. couchsurf until you have enough solid references for a job.

crowdfunding sites also can help out too, if you are good at writing the sob story and have enough friends willing to help out and share the link. Fund stuff like: hiking the appalachian, kayaking down the mississippi. Only use 50% of the proceeds and promise to donate the other half to a certain charity.

If she is first in her class she can get into a good school for free, get good grades there and transfer to a great school for the last 2 years. I went to community college for 2 years and had a 3.9 gpa, the. To penn state free for the last 2 years of school. Then I went to pharmacy school and only paid $40k for that which I made triple my loans each year for the 3-4 years I worked in big pharma. Now I have my own real estate company and answer to no one.

It's just how society is here... pretty messed up honestly.

Ideally, families would actually own land 100% without taxes where they raise families and build shelters together for their kids when they are adults.

All while growing healthy abundant food in rich fertile gardens.

However we don't have that because almost no one values or shares knowledge of those things and the TPTB/system do their best to prevent families working together.

OP: ASK GOD what to do!

"I am a most unworthy sinner, but I have cried out to the Lord for grace and mercy, and they have covered me completely. I have found the sweetest consolation since I made it my whole purpose to enjoy His marvelous presence. For the execution of the journey to the Indies, I did not make use of intelligence, mathematics or maps. It is simply the fulfillment of what Isaiah prophesied…"

"No one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Savior, if it is just and if the intention is purely for His holy service. The working out of all things has been assigned to each person by our Lord, but it all happens cording to His sovereign will, even though He gives advice. He lacks nothing that is not in the power of men to give Him. Oh what a gracious Lord, who desires that people should perform for Him those things for which He holds Himself responsible! Day and night, moment by moment, everyone should express their most devoted gratitude to Him."

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 54728234

Well, I really busted my butt as an undergrad. I worked 2 jobs, one as a caretaker for an autistic child, and another at a retail store in the mall, so I was basically working full-time and going to school full-time. It was rough, I won't lie. But it is possible to do (work and go to school). By senior year, I felt pretty burned-out, so I dropped one of my jobs and took a loan my senior year.

But I also applied for all kinds of scholarships and wound up getting some money through that. There's all kinds of scholarships that a lot of people would never even think about or haven't even heard of. I used to do regular searches trying to find out what types of money I could get through different programs (for example, there was one paid internship and research grant that I got because I am half Puerto Rican, lol). Any kind of demographic feature that might make your daughter stand out...they will have some kind of scholarship for it.

If she is going to be an international student, the university itself may have all kinds of financial offerings to her...and also...most universities will admit international students over domestic students with even identical transcripts. As unfair as that may be for domestic students, it's the truth. When you said you were from the UK, I wasn't sure of the status of your daughter, so that's why I mention that. If your daughter is a citizen, definitely try to stay in-state. In-state tuition is only a fraction the cost of out-of-state tuition. And if your daughter is a citizen, I bet you they might even have something like... some kind of scholarship for 1st generation kids. I wouldn't be surprised.

Make sure she does well on her SAT's or ACT's (or whatever entrance exams she is taking). College admissions have a logistical regression equation where they plug in test scores with GPA, and it's supposed to predict future success in college. I really wish there wasn't such a heavy reliance on test scores, but there is. Companies like Kaplan and Princeton Review have classes she can take on improving her test scores and include practice tests.

The whole thing is such a racket, I know.

If your daughter decides to go to grad school...there's a good chance it could all be free (like it was for me). Almost ALL grad schools offer partial or full funding if you work for the university. In my particular program, every single one of us was garuanteed full funding. So, it wasn't just me, but ALL of us got tuition waivers and stipends, provided we worked as teaching or research assistants.

I'm not sure why that part is not more common knowledge, because every grad school I even applied to had partial or full funding, and I applied to about 20.

Oh yeah...which reminds me too...make sure she applies to enough schools. At least 12-15. And getting started in her applications about a year ahead of time will help...because they make the whole process as tedious and as complicated as possible, and every single application will be different, have different essays, etc. And make sure she highlights unique cultural factors about herself in her essays. They put a big emphasis on that in admissions.

I know it's overwhelming...but if she's as motivated and successful as she sounds, she should be able to do it! :)

That's how much loans I took out for undergrad and grad school COMBINED!

So suck it.

10 grand......Please enlighten us where the colleges are that will educate you for that amount of money.

It would be an epiphany for everyone.

Actually, do tell. I have a 16 year old who really deserves to go to a decent college, first in her class, hard worker etc. I told her she can't take more than 20000 in loans and she is willing to work to pay towards college. I am from the UK and have no idea how this s shit works so advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Parents kicking me out
You all are in the wrong field.

HEALTHCARE!!!

I am a nurse and I have to block people from calling me about jobs.

I am always being approached about bigger and better opportunities and to anywhere in the world, as well.

I love helping people, seeing the world and making a decent living to boot.
