A slice of tropical paradise is on hold this week as a strong tropical cyclone twists its way through the islands of the southwestern Pacific Ocean, threatening numerous countries with powerful winds, flooding rains, and rough seas. Tropical Cyclone Winston caused damage in Tonga as it passed northwest of the island on Tuesday, and the news for that small nation gets even worse: Winston turned around on Wednesday and now it’s going back the way it came, once again posing a threat to Tonga by the end of the week.

Tropical Cyclone Winston isn’t the biggest storm, but it’s both photogenic and it packs a mean punch. According to the latest advisory at 1800z (1:00 PM EST), the storm had winds of 95 knots—about 110 MPH—which would make it the

NASA catches Tropical Cyclone Uriah nearing peak


On Feb 17 at 04:50 UTC (Feb. 16 at 11:50 p.m. EST) the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer or MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured a visible image of Tropical Cyclone Uriah as it continued to approach peak. The MODIS image showed a 19 nautical mile-wide eye with powerful, high thunderstorms circling. Bands of thunderstorms wrapped into the low-level center from the eastern and southern quadrants.
