Fuck em all. Dish just raised my rates again and I'm about ready to tell them to fuck off and watch everything on Netflix.
 Quoting: Copperhead

do it. I've been cable free for over 5 years and nothing is missed that I want to watch. buy an indoor antenna to get the free channels, get Netflix and/or Amazon prime and find some good streaming sites. you'll never look back.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71503931

I've got Netflix, and put in an amplified omni-directional antenna that gets about 30 local channels now. I just have to take that last step and tell Dish to go pound sand.

Charter wanted $30.00 a extra line that I wanted run for 2 extra bedrooms.

Found an old splitter and me and hubby took care of that real quick and we are tech dumb..like box of rox dumb.

Did some searching online and found out I can split my Ethernet(yup)still on it...no wifi.

I have a 25ft. line im gonna split off and feed another bedroom with that so my grand daughter can play her x-box when she comes out for the summer.

Re: Comcast just got hosed by the FCC
The "Unlock The Box" movement has passed the FCC. Now companies like TimeWarner and Comcast / Xfinity will be forced to allow third party box makers to make devices allowing you to access your cable television subscription without having to rent their box for $14.95 a month.

This is a death knell for Comcast. Instead of paying them $14.95 a month you can get a $100 - $200 device to do the same thing.

When I had cable television and internet I had to pay $14.95 a month for each of our two boxes and $9.99 a month for our modem. We cut television and bought our own modem, saving us about $110 a month. That's $2640 saved since we did that.

They have 22.5 million people renting at least one box per month. That's $336,375,000 per month, or, $4 billion a year potentially gone from their bottom line.

[link to nerdist.com]

I predict comcast to raise rates to make up the loss in revenues and ultimately kill themselves.

And if Starry, Inc. takes off you can say goodbye to Comcast for internet as well.

I predict comcast will be dead in less than 10 years.
 Quoting: The Årtist

I don't understand why people are still paying for cable. 90% of the channels you won't ever watch

Get Rokus, NetFlix, Sling, Tablo, Hulu+, Vudu, and use the other free apps (like PBS), and you have something better than cable.

I've been a cord cutter for a year and a half. Not missing anything, including Charter.

Re: Comcast just got hosed by the FCC
I think cable companies will begin surviving off of data service alone. At one point we were getting a lot of revenue from land line based phone service through our cable plant, using EMTAs. It seems like a lot of customers are ditching their landlines and are now going just with cellular service.

For the 1st time last year our data subscribers exceeded our cable subscribers. We still have never missed quarterly or yearly financial goals.

Cable will slowly be phased out and we will be providing strictly data services but the amount of bandwidth customers will need is going to grow, grow and grow. We are just starting to get all of our headend equipment upgraded so we can offer gigabit residential service here in the states. Of course 10 years ago our basic data package was 35$ and that was the only package we offered.

Now our basic package is still $35 for a 12 Mbps cap and we have 3 other packages with our top being $99.95 for 200 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up.

I think a lot of companies are looking forward to getting rid of the cable carriers because of how much bandwidth it takes to haul those channels. We had to convert all of our analog channels to digital channels, which requires a device that decrypts the signal, to free up precious bandwidth.

For me hving a static ip address when i am nkt paying for one to host a site, for business, etc. is an enfringement of my 4th amendment rights.

Everyone loves to hate the cable companies. The majority of people have no clue what it actually takes to deliver those signals without errors.

Everyone likes to envision receiving free service devoid of a centralized cable company because 'poof' it will just magically work.

Surprisingly the majority of support is in US call centers. Even the major third party is in Arizona or maybe Canada. Depending on the call volume it could be a call center down the road.

Their top support out of house is a company called Convergys

The FCC tried this before and you got cable cards. This time it will be the same as owning your own modem, which is just going to be a truck roll disaster.

Imagine this, cable goes out so you call them. They send a tech turns out it's your box. Now they charge you for erroneously rolling a truck and your cable still doesn't work.

We also offer service to cable cards that the customer can purchase on their own and install in TV sets. But then they always complain about not having all of the guide information and options. Just trying to explain why is futile in most cases. You end up just saying 'that is how it works' and leave it at that.

Just getting people to understand they are responsible for the cable in their own houses is almost impossible.

The two are in no way connected.

Available RF spectrum has not increased and data throughput for a given media has not changed.

Rates are normally raised because content providers raise their rates. Data caps are put in place because links upstream become saturated.

How do improved processor speeds give us more bandwidth? We have a usable frequency range from 54 Mhz to 1000 Mhz for forward signals. We only have about 5-7 Mhz to 42 Mhz of usable bandwidth for return signals. I don't see how increased processor speeds give us more usable bandwidth?

So Plastic, do you work on a HFC cable system? We usually send the signal from our headends out to nodes via fiber and then convert to analog over coax after the node? Hmmm, gotta go. I would love to pick your brain sometime. Maybe tomorrow if you are around.

I'm not saying there isn't a ton that can be done but this will not change the face of television.

The profit on cable box rentals isn't as high as some think. The boxes are not free they cost on average $600.

Buy your own and all that responsibility falls on the customer to have it services and replaced if broken. Outage times are going to skyrocket.

Re: Comcast just got hosed by the FCC
So Plastic, do you work on a HFC cable system? We usually send the signal from our headends out to nodes via fiber and then convert to analog over coax after the node? Hmmm, gotta go. I would love to pick your brain sometime. Maybe tomorrow if you are around.

Mostly HFC we have been doing a good bit of RFoG recently but that will die down with DOCSIS 3.1

The long term plan is to have everything IP based but realistically replacing 23 million sub boxes for one that has a D3 modem is going to take forever.

I'm always around, even when they think I'm not.

Lol I used to work for them. If you knew more about them you might not be as mad.

On this one you are wrong. You don't have all the information and no not everyone here hates them.

clappa

Everyone loves to hate the cable companies. The majority of people have no clue what it actually takes to deliver those signals without errors.

Everyone likes to envision receiving free service devoid of a centralized cable company because 'poof' it will just magically work.

Been an engineer for cable for 10 years now. I'm tired of trying to explain it fact is yes it is a business and support is shit but the call center turnover rate is the main reason.

I've built entire headends with many millions in equipment but everyone thinks it's just a wire and maybe some satellite receivers.

I'm tired of the cable is dying claim. ATT said it, Directv said it, Verizon said they would own it in 5 years when they came out with fios. Every one of them was wrong because they don't understand what it takes to run the business.

No problem. Get 2 boxes with one used as backup.

Rolling truck problem solved.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71368576

Again that would be on the customer. You would still have to call in to get the box added to the account.

I don't see customers shelling out $XXX for a box then buying another for $XXX

Do you do that with an iPhone?
