Dish just raised my rates again and I'm about ready to tell them to fuck off and watch everything on Netflix. Quoting: Copperhead do it. I've been cable free for over 5 years and nothing is missed that I want to watch. buy an indoor antenna to get the free channels, get Netflix and/or Amazon prime and find some good streaming sites. you'll never look back. I've got Netflix, and put in an amplified omni-directional antenna that gets about 30 local channels now. I just have to take that last step and tell Dish to go pound sand. |

Now companies like TimeWarner and Comcast / Xfinity will be forced to allow third party box makers to make devices allowing you to access your cable television subscription without having to rent their box for $14.95 a month. Quoting: The Årtist This is a death knell for Comcast. Instead of paying them $14.95 a month you can get a $100 - $200 device to do the same thing. When I had cable television and internet I had to pay $14.95 a month for each of our two boxes and $9.99 a month for our modem. We cut television and bought our own modem, saving us about $110 a month. That's $2640 saved since we did that. They have 22.5 million people renting at least one box per month. That's $336,375,000 per month, or, $4 billion a year potentially gone from their bottom line. [link to nerdist.com] I predict comcast to raise rates to make up the loss in revenues and ultimately kill themselves. And if Starry, Inc. takes off you can say goodbye to Comcast for internet as well. I predict comcast will be dead in less than 10 years. I don't understand why people are still paying for cable. 90% of the channels you won't ever watch Get Rokus, NetFlix, Sling, Tablo, Hulu+, Vudu, and use the other free apps (like PBS), and you have something better than cable. I've been a cord cutter for a year and a half. Not missing anything, including Charter. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 920396 United States 02/19/2016 07:09 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I think cable companies will begin surviving off of data service alone. At one point we were getting a lot of revenue from land line based phone service through our cable plant, using EMTAs. It seems like a lot of customers are ditching their landlines and are now going just with cellular service. For the 1st time last year our data subscribers exceeded our cable subscribers. We still have never missed quarterly or yearly financial goals. Cable will slowly be phased out and we will be providing strictly data services but the amount of bandwidth customers will need is going to grow, grow and grow. We are just starting to get all of our headend equipment upgraded so we can offer gigabit residential service here in the states. Of course 10 years ago our basic data package was 35$ and that was the only package we offered. Now our basic package is still $35 for a 12 Mbps cap and we have 3 other packages with our top being $99.95 for 200 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up. I think a lot of companies are looking forward to getting rid of the cable carriers because of how much bandwidth it takes to haul those channels. We had to convert all of our analog channels to digital channels, which requires a device that decrypts the signal, to free up precious bandwidth. |
