How does one safely throw away a computer?
They're full of cadmium and filling up the land-fills. Now that it's stripped of anything useful - do I bring it to the toxic dump?

Why are they carting those things off to the land-fills?

Are they even accepted at hazardous materials.

Where I live there are recycling centres. I deliver my used electronic components there. I don't know whether that is possible where you live, but perhaps you can check that out?

just wipe the hard drive and dump it off and some goodwill store during the middle of the night when nobody is there... or go there during the day and ask for a $500-$1000 tax writeoff on it.

I've seen the Dumpster behind Goodwill.
They DUMP lots of stuff.

Unless they have a local Computer store.

Wipe the hard drive first (format, then use a big magnet) and heave the thing in the dumpster behind your building. This approach has always worked for me anyway. It's fairly safe too as I have not been injured doing this in the past.

ALWAYS lock the garbage can so that poor people can\'t get free computer parts.

Yeah I have seen behind MANY stores,huge bins full of all sorts of stuff they`re chucking away....what is wrong with it ?...Well NOTHING before the store management ran a razor right through the stuff,thus rendering it useless.....what utter waste...mustn`t let anyone get anything for free now must we ?

No, not sarcasm. The question was about safely disposing of a computer. The issue is twofold: physical safety of the person doing the disposing and data securtiy in the age of identity theft, etc.

I have been building, using and disposing of computers for many years and have never had either of the above safety issues with my disposal method.

Just put it at the road in front of your house, someone less fortunate will come lby and pick it up.
I put four out one day and a guy brought them home, said they were for his kids.
I told him they were old and not very good.
He said any computer is better than no computer.

I even went inside to get him some keyboards and software.
" I'll cut you like a box,along the flaps."
