Quoting: Anonymous Coward 65153989 Do I don't. I sound no different from an American. I do NOT say "Aboot" or any of that crap. I play in a recreational hockey league and you can always tell the Canadians by their speech, especially the French ones. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 71566795 United Kingdom 02/29/2016 03:10 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We honestly don't. We sound nearly identical to Americans who speak standard English and I have never heard anyone say "Aboot" before (seriously). I'm betting the Canadian accent is pretty much a myth. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69456038 Americans AND Canadians have accents that, like all countries varies from region to region. Some English people are accent free. |

I don't think a person really notices the dialect in the area they live. Quoting: UTownReturns Not in southern Ontario we don't, which Canadians have you talked to and where were they from? I'm just curious. Folks from Alberta say aboot, eh! deplorably republican |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69456038 Hmm, its more "aboat" than "aboot", but there are subtle difference in standard Canadian English and standard American English accents. Frankly, I like the Canadian accent. INK8 |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 70887370 Canada 02/29/2016 03:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We all have a bit of an accent, but it's always the "other guy" who has the really annoying one. Most Canadians from Ontario to British Columbia sound the same. Then there's the Maritimes and Newfoundland/Labrador, yikes. I grew up in Pennsylvania; and now listening to them I can't stand that accent. It's all relative and what we're used to. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 69456038 Not sure I agree with your premise OP, although I think that southern Ontario had a very mild 'canadian' accent. Kind of like BC, although thats kind of got a lame hipster valley thing going. But Newfies on the other hand.. They have a language all to thwmselves. Anonymous Coward User ID: 71557939 United States 02/29/2016 03:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Seriously.. I know three Canadians from Ontario snd Skype with them often, they have a Canadian accent. They say "aboat" and stuff like that but it goes way beyond just the "ou" sounds, they have a very different intonation that's difficult for me to put into words. It is a friendly accent that sounds a little bit goofy but none the less inviting. |

On the other hand, it's only one word. Now take the accents from the SE United States. Now that's an accent, and growing up in the NE United States it always grated on my ears (and still does). |
