How long will Cod Liver Oil stay good in my Cupboard?
when i bought it is was in a fridge, on the back it says keep in dry dark place at room temperature, so ive kept it in my cupboard. it's been over a month and im still eating it, but I can't tell if it's rotten or not because it tastes like ass either way. why do they keep it in the fridge at the store then tell me to put in cupboard, and how long will it last there?

What is it's sell-by/use-by date?

Normally effective shelf life involves assessing storage conditions such as container, mean temeperature and any UV light exposure. Generally keeping oils in dark glass bottles in a fridge will extend usable life.

I've seen a year quoted for CLO but beware of commercial products with extended shelf lives, they are often contaminated by other chemicals and preservatives that you wouldn't want in your body.

As always, do your own homework and read the all small print.

the directions do not matter. cold slows down the degrading of all chemicals. put it in the fridge. the store did because they know this.

The only disadvantage of keeping it in a fridge is that the oil will be thicker so more difficult to pour. It may even partially sludge up or solidify.

Good quality oil should be pale in colour, fairly thin at room temperature and have a slightly fishy taste. If it tastes rancid and smells like a rat's ass then junk it and buy fresh.

hi

You would not normally store cod, liver, or cod liver outside on a shelf.

So I suspect that it would not be wise to store cod liver oil at room temperature either.

All oils should be kept cold and in dark containers. This includes olive oil, which is remarkably stable but does degrade in light and warm temp. Coconut oil is amazingly stable--prob an exception to the rule. Def keep cod liver oil in the fridge. Flax oil is the worst--goes bad fast.
