When gold can magically turn into food, shelter, tools and guns, give me a call and gold will become important. As it stands, gold and silvers only real value, is it's value in industry, medicine and science. it's value as a currency, has already passed. Those why try to use it as a currency, will soon find the day, when it comes worthless.

The only reason gold had value, is because people gave gold value in of itself. Food has value, because if I eat it, I can stay alive. Water has value, because if I drink it, I cans stay alive. Clothing has value, because it protects me against the elements, as does shelter. Gold, outside of it's uses in medicine, industry and science, is a decade or two, away from becoming worthless. It is vainer then an opulent mansion built on a foundation of sand.

The greatest wealth in the modern era, is Caucasian people, or rather, high IQ'ed, Germanic-Norse people. The natural doings, of such people, often generate more meaningful wealth, then all the gold in the Earth, ever could.

Some might say, Gold=Wealth. If an asteroid, ended up in stable Earth orbit, as a second moon, and that asteroid was 99% gold, and it was mined out completely, increasing the Earths gold stockpiles a million fold, what happened? Does more wealth exist on the Earth, or, did the value of prior gold wealth, diminish?

Also, most Western peoples, aside for negroids and some hispanics in the ghetto, for the purposes of jewelry, view gold as having worth. To the millions upon millions of people in the West, it is in effect, a worthless metal, of small perceivable value.

Fiat currency, has greater value, because I can use fiat currency, to buy the things I need to continue my existence. If the fiat currency collapses, aka, people no longer view it as an acceptable instrument of trade, and instead view bottle caps as a more worth while vehicle for commerce, then bottle caps will become worth something.

That is why I tell people who want to dabble in metals for financial/prepper reasons, to buy copper and other metals, that have real life, practical applications. Granted, the one good application of gold is as a dental applicant, for cavities. Silver has value, as an antiseptic, so a small stockpile for that purpose, would be worthwhile.
