Global Warming vs Global Dimming
I just viewed this excellent BBC video.

[link to www.informationclearinghouse.info]

It is, IMO, extremely important information presented very powerfully. All who are concerned about the future of this planet should view it!

If someone more technically skilled could post a direct link, or better yet, embed the video, I would be most pleased.

Summary - The emission of greenhouse gases and particulates has created a system of opposing effects. Greenhouse gases causing global warming while particulates are causing a cooling effect. Together, the real implications of global warming are being masked and its magnitude could be vastly underestimated. Paradoxically, reduction of particulates in emmissions could exacerbate the problem of warming.

This is a must see, and I look forward to GLP commentary.

Seadog .... Even though this is a Google video I don't think it's possible to embed it here because it's part of the Information Clearing House website. As far as I know you actually need to have the Google (or YouTube) URL to embed videos within your posts.

Will now go and view the video. Thanks for the post Seadog ..... this is a topic that should be of interest to all of us.

Re: Global Warming vs Global Dimming
Very interesting video!

For 15 years Travis had been researching an apparently obscure topic, whether the vapour trails left by aircraft were having a significant effect on the climate. In the aftermath of 9/11 the entire US fleet was grounded, and Travis finally had a chance to find out.

We found that the change in temperature range during those three days was just over one degrees C. And you have to realise that from a layman's perspective that doesn't sound like much, but from a climate perspective that is huge.

One degree in just three days no one had ever seen such a big climatic change happen so fast. This was a new kind of climate change. Scientists call it Global Dimming.

Between the 1950s and the early 1990s the level of solar energy reaching the earth's surface had dropped 9% in Antarctica, 10% in the USA, by almost 30% in Russia. And by 16% in parts of the British Isles. This was a truly global phenomenon, and Gerry gave it a suitable name - Global Dimming. But again, the response from other scientists was one of sheer disbelief.

We thought we live in a global warming world, um but this is actually er not right. We lived in a global warming plus a Global Dimming world, and now we are taking out Global Dimming. So we end up with the global warming world, which will be much worse than we thought it will be, much hotter.

This is the crux of the problem. While the greenhouse effect has been warming the planet, it now seems Global Dimming has been cooling it down. So the warming caused by carbon dioxide has been hidden from us by the cooling from air pollution. But that situation is now starting to change.

We're gonna be in a situation unless we act where the cooling pollutant is dropping off while the warming pollutant is going up, CO2 will be going up and particles will be dropping off and that means we'll get an accelerated warming. We'll get a double whammy, we'll get, we'll get reducing cooling and increased heating at the same time and that's, that's a problem for us."

Re: Global Warming vs Global Dimming
A longer version of this with the same people being interviewed but in greater detail was done by PBS last spring and is titled "Dimming the Sun." The DVD can be purchased from WGBH. The entire transcript is on the web also.

As a result of this information, climate scientists are already talking (a meeting at Stanford a couple of weeks ago) about dumping large amounts of sulfur dioxide (precursor to acid rain) in the atmosphere to slow down the warming. Apparently those bozos thought that poisoning our ecosystems, killing forests, streams, and lakes, and dissolving ancient monuments, cathedrals and other structures was an worthwhile tradeoff to cool things down a bit. Classic linear thinking stupidity from people who do complex systems analysis. Apparently they left their brains at the lab.

It is a pretty cool video, isn't it! I'm glad its up once again. I think it's pretty important, not for just what it has to say, but to see, again, that all is not quite as straight forward as it seems!

If you are reading this - take the time. Watch it. Something may change in you!

Look fwd to that Red. Although I have always been skeptical of chemtrails, this video certainly points to a possible rationale for them. I am a pilot and have seen many contrails but only once have I seen something that was definitely not. Interestingly, it was the very same chemtrail seen by Randy Thomas - who got this whole thing going. Small world!

Re: Global Warming vs Global Dimming
OP I’m so glad someone finally is bringing this subject up.
I usually try to tell people about it on threads related to global warming, ‘green taxes’, climate change etc, but every time it seems this is way over their heads. It’s understandable since global dimming doesn’t seem to have as much publicity as let’s say global warming.

Global dimming [link to en.wikipedia.org] presents a paradox to the public, provided they even know about it on the first place.
Global dimming is a term used by scientists to explain the phenomenon that less sunlight is reaching the planet, primarily because of extended pollution, which forms a blanket that shields the earth from some of the sun's rays. Scientists are very worried because they have discovered that although global dimming is significant, the Earth is still warming.

In a way the pollutant particles in the atmosphere created a weak protection shield for the sun temperatures that are on the increase.
Scientists would have everyone believe that there is nothing wrong with the sun itself, despite all the signs to the contrary indicating that the sun is much hotter than it has been in the past. Solar flares are off the scale and ultraviolet rays are so intensified that everyone is being warned of the danger of skin cancer from exposure to the sun. But scientists do not want us considering the sun as the culprit because there is nothing they can do about the hotter sun, so they misdirect everyone to look at the less crucial issues such as the greenhouse effect, pollution and now even global dimming.
Although the fact that they don’t talk about global dimming that much should give you an indication that something is going on.

Current research that has been released publicly now estimates that global dimming shows that were it not for the pollution that shields the earth from the heating-up sun, the earth would be much hotter already.

Re: Global Warming vs Global Dimming
Thanks for the above - a good overview of the topic. Interesting point regarding the nature of the sun itself. Seems that there is a lot of extra energy being thrown off the sun these days, and that energy must be going somewhere.

I have seen mention of this topic on threads here before but I will offer a personal observation. The sky looks less deep blue than I remember when looking up at as a kid. I have attributed it to aging eyes, but I am not the first to remark on this. So maybe there has been a change. In addition, over the last five years I have spent considerable time in the Southern Ocean with the ozone hole open. There, the sunlight is most tangibly different. The sunlight has lost its yellows, and its warmth, it is not friendly, but piercing and blue-white. Looking directly at a white surface is painful.

We are told that the UV component of sunlight has changed, but what about the rest of the spectrum; ie - IR and visible? Be interesting to see any data on this, both terrestrial observations and orbital. Any leads?

Re: Global Warming vs Global Dimming
You raise very good questions, unfortunately I'm not an expert on the matter. The heating up of the sun must have had some effect on the sun light spectrum as well as radiation levels. It'd be good to find some info on that matter.

It's true that in recent years the sun seem brighter, it's light is piercing to the eyes and it seems one never gets accustomed to it, like in the past. Also the sky seems dimmer.
