Programming language makes circuits out of bacteria

Biological circuits have been a reality for years. However, making them is no mean feat: you typically have to create everything from scratch, which is impractical for everyone but a specialized genetic engineer.

MIT has a better way, though. It developed a programming language that makes it comparatively easy to produce these organic machines -- you just write code (based on existing computer instructions) and get a bacteria-friendly DNA sequence that does what you want. In the lab, sample circuits in E. coli did everything from ranking inputs to measuring oxygen levels.

The early work is buggy. Out of 60 circuits, only 45 worked on the first try. Should everything go well, though, this could democratize genetics. You wouldn't need expertise in biology to custom-code DNA.

In theory, even a high schooler learning the basics of programming could produce living circuits. Ultimately, this could lead to bacteria that solve specific conditions, such as reducing lactose intolerance (by improving digestion) or producing pesticide when bugs attack a plant.

article!!!

March 31, 2016

Press Inquiries
MIT biological engineers have created a programming language that allows them to rapidly design complex, DNA-encoded circuits that give new functions to living cells.
Using this language, anyone can write a program for the function they want, such as detecting and responding to certain environmental conditions. They can then generate a DNA sequence that will achieve it.

“It is literally a programming language for bacteria,” says Christopher Voigt, an MIT professor of biological engineering. “You use a text-based language, just like you’re programming a computer. Then you take that text and you compile it and it turns it into a DNA sequence that you put into the cell, and the circuit runs inside the cell.”

Voigt and colleagues at Boston University and the National Institute of Standards and Technology have used this language, which they describe in the April 1 issue of Science, to build circuits that can detect up to three inputs and respond in different ways. Future applications for this kind of programming include designing bacterial cells that can produce a cancer drug when they detect a tumor, or creating yeast cells that can halt their own fermentation process if too many toxic byproducts build up.

The researchers plan to make the user design interface available on the Web.

Gosh this is great!

What could possibly go wrong?

Nobody ever introduced a bug while writing software, so the paradigm is perfectly safe for creating biological machines!

not sure what this means but:

in 2000, i was travelling through elko nv and read the newspaper.

the newpaper was very proud to announce that one of its local residents had made a monumental breakthroug which would change computers forever.

the article read nearly the same as what you have posted, OP.

wtf. not sure if it got hushed or if it's already being used and now is becomeing public? wtf

It's been sort of a dream of mine to use technology similar to this to create camera lenses. Imagine using this to change focal lengths. No more giant zooms. A lens the size of a small prime could zoom out to 1000mm just by rearranging the bacteria through a small electrical impulse. Would be really cool.
