On earth you have billions of air molecules striking you and pulling heat away or transfering to you every second. In space there is no medium to pull the heat away. In fact, you would die of asphyxiation in about 120 seconds but it would actually take about 45 min to freeze your body solid if you were ejected naked into space. If you ever find yourself exposed to the near vacuum of space, so long as you don’t try to hold your breath, which would result in your lungs rupturing and thus pretty well guaranteed that the incident would be fatal, you’ll likely remain conscious for about 10-15 seconds, with perhaps half that being useful consciousness. After that, you’ll be fine as long as you’re placed back in a pressurized environment within about 90-180 seconds [ link to www.todayifoundout.com] |

Although you don't need to freeze solid to die of the cold, once your core temperature has fallen by around 9 degrees C you are pretty much guaranteed to die. |

For example, spacecraft actually have the problem of not having an easy way to vent heat into space. There is no air so your actually more likely to cook to death than feeze if your cooling goes.
This is a result of the fact that no air molecules are colliding with the surface of the craft and pulling heat away. The only way to vent heat is electromatic radiation in the infrared frequency.
So space may sound cold...but it actually for practical application is not, because cold does not really matter much in a vacuum. |
