The field is called rocketry, historically very difficult.

I worked in the space program for years designing payloads as well as in propulsion and know
from whence I speak.

The fact that SpaceX has not had MORE failures is, quite frankly, the unbelievable aspect to their program.

Most other development efforts have rockets cartwheeling all over the place, exploding downrange,
shutting down for unknown reasons, etc.. Normally, it is only after considerable experimentation
and repeated FAILURE do they find the sweet spot. And even then, things still go wrong.

To this day, NASA, the DoD and the prime contractors all have regular failures.

Same thing with the foreign programs. CNSA, Roscosmos, ESA, JAXA, ISRO all have regular failures, some
of which are absolutely spectacular.

GM does have a point about the complexity of trying to land the booster. As an engineer, I find it incredible the degree of success they have had so far. The amount of variables involved is mind blowing.
