Why do people join the illuminati if it is a death sentence?

The are promised some variation of reincarnation/high position in the next life with lucifer as their god.

But most people who are religious, which is ~90% of people in the world, also believe in an afterlife of some sort. So there is nothing new in that department. And non-members aren't jumping off buildings. So why do these people sign up? Are they all especially suicidal?

Here is an idea. After they they join, they eventually learn just how corrupt the world is, and feel like they need to end it. What do you guys think?

The dude's (Harrison Ford's character's) son. How he got drawn over to the dark side and they were trying to break him free from it? He was so eager to please his dark master that he killed his own father to prove his loyalty to him.

Summary of thread: world is run by people too stupid to want to live, thinking death is better than life. Being a total nobody leads to the longest life but not a happy one.

It's like a bag of money and exposed radioactive isotopes.
