Anonymous Coward User ID: 21968003 United States 04/24/2016 12:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I don't think an inter-continental railroad can compete with container shipping. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 71709270 Hmmm let's see... Effiency of pushing an object through the water versus rolling a steel wheel with roller bearings along a steel rail. Pound for pound the steel rail is an order of magnitude more efficient. The only thing the boat has going for it is the sheer size of the boat and really that is not part of the comparison when you consider that the rail can supply a continuous flow of containers while the boats operate like slugs and are tedious to load and unload. They both operate at different efficiency points. First off, you don't need to maintain the ocean, though of course you must keep the ports operational. Modern container handling is a marvel of efficiency. Multimodal shipping means that containers can come straight from the ships and onto trains or trucks. One shot! Trains can move faster and can go anywhere on land. They can be switched can move a container to within a few miles of its destination. From there, the container can go to a truck for final delivery. The two systems are complementary, and can often function redundantly when one modality is compromised(icebergs, derailments, weather, port strikes, etc. It's always best to have choices. Yep options are always great to have but from an efficiency viewpoint, rail beats boat by a LARGE margin. Modern material handling is a marvel of ENGINEERING. That doesn't mean it has comparable efficiency, only that engineering has mechanized the enormous amount of work required to make it competitive thanks to cheap oil. Just because oil and energy consumption can allow 1 man to do the work of 1000 doesn't make a process more efficient. Are you a politician or just one of their lackeys? |

Quoting: filth Will be tough to get something like that approved by all the alphabet agencies. That line would come across near Nome and snake over to Canada, crossing all sorts of federally-protected lands, tribal lands, state lands, etc. Maybe could be done, but not with the current EPA. Perhaps that is why the opposition has made such an issue of "eminent domain". There would have to be all sorts of that involved in such a major project, and if they can get the voters to think of it in negative terms it will stall the plan if not cancel it outright. Quoting: Neurotibotical They just wanna burn 'dem Mooslims, y'all! Ron Paul was our modern-day hero and we lost our chance. Trump is a fucking joke. Actually the Nation was put on the downward track when they scoffed at Ross Perot, and instead elected Clinton who brought us NAFTA, gave all of our nuclear secrets to China, and figured out how to get into the Social Security bank account, leaving nothing but I.O.U.'s And now his wife wants to finish the job with Clinton 2.0.
