northern tool is a cut above. Harbor freight has some ok stuff cheap but some real garbage too. ALWAYS go to their website and look at user reviews of whatever you are considering buying

I have bought anything from HF for 18yrs cuz their tools was soooooo bad.....recently I borrowed some HF ratcheting wrenches from a friend and was quite shocked at the improvements.....The HF "pro" line of tools are actually decent and in some cases better than the China made Sears Craftsman stuff....a lot of the HF stuff is made in Taiwan now...

I love their Composite ratchets so much, I bought 10.....

there stuff is made in china of the lowest quality.

I bought one of HF's wooden workbench kits and it is of excellent quality and design. I am going to buy another one when I have time. Some of their stuff will surprise you.

if you buy tools from harbor freight then you probably dont use those tools very often. either out of choice or because they dont last very long.

If you shop at Bottom of the Harbor Freight, you shop with Mao!

Thats what I use to think also, but they have come a long way.....not all their items are great but they have some real winners....a little search on line will show some pros are using their tools....I have Snap On and Matco and somewhat of a tool snob but the proof is in the pudding....a recent destruction test of ratchets have the HF ratchet stronger than a few US brands like Craftsman, SK, and Proto...

thats odd. HF ratchets are usually the first things to break. They stop ratcheting, seize up or the square knob on the wrench which holds the socket sheers off when too much force is applied.

the company i work for buys a lot of HF stuff. when we travel, they buy HF tools because its cheaper to leave the stuff there than it is to bring it home. We usually only carry power tools home.

when working at home i use craftsman stuff whenever possible, lifetime warranty is great. Our company has gone through countless HF tools that lasted a fraction of what should have been their life and left us in pretty desperate situations. Not every country has a home depot or lowes to replace whats broken.

Obviously we wont all have the same experiences, we obviously arent doing the same job. From my experience, I wouldnt suggest HF for things like ratchets, drills or other things with moving parts. Some things are ok, but it should be obvious, its kinda hard to mess up a a screwdriver since all its just a piece of metal with a flathead end and a plastic handle end.

When I buy at Harbor Freight I usually put on dark sun glasses and look both ways for people I might know when I leave.

Shopping there makes me feel dirty, (and guilty) I usually have to shower off when I get home.

ALL the HF screwdrivers suck except set # 94607 ....its sold as their "professional" set( I'm in my shop right now)....once I find a good product, I load up on them....Their Earthquake impact gun and sockets are great also....guys on the tool forums rave about them....the US General tool carts are another winner....cheaper and stronger than Craftsman.....I stopped buying craftsman cuz they are overpriced HF stuff now....Craftsman went china....HF is funny that their stuff is different lot from lot same item but some are made in China and some in Taiwan......any of the Taiwanese made ones are pretty decent....The 72 toothed composite ratchets are great working around finished parts to prevent scratching, not freezing to use in winter, and nice around electricity...

I bought a nice little welder's table and mig welder cart and a little 70 amp stick welder from them, but the best prices I've found for common tools e.g. air compressors, plasma cutters...is amazon.com

Best bet....check out the local flea market. Lots of us made stuff dirt cheap.
